A commuter has hit back at residents who have said parking in side streets in Beaconsfield has led to a fear for pedestrians’ safety.

Following a consultation survey sent to residents across seven roads in the town, people were asked their thoughts on parking issues, but one man has now defended commuters who park in residential roads.

Beaconsfield Town Council is soon to discuss the results of the survey which was distributed in Candlemas Mead, Ledborough Wood, Oakdene, Garvin Avenue, Maxwell Road, Wooster Road and Malkin Drive.

Last week, town councillor Roy Foster said off-street parking for homeowners is often taken up by commuters and their parking often causes danger.

Commuter Chris Phillips, a marketing freelancer who travels to the Old Town during the week, parks in Candlemas Mead and he says more affordable parking should be available, while “threatening” residents have also tried to stop commuters parking in their roads.

He said: “It's pure fantasy that residents don't have anywhere to park. There is plenty of space for all.

“There isn't any double parking, and whilst cars do park on kerbs there's no issue from parents taking children to school.”

He added: “I've been threatened a number of times with physical violence. They are not friendly folk up there.

“I know of other colleagues who won't park there because of the intimidation. The last time I was threatened I seriously considered calling the police.

“The onus is on Beaconsfield Council to provide free/affordable parking. I certainly can't afford to park in the car parks at £4.50 a day.

“If you put parking permits up on the above roads, you'll just push the issue elsewhere.

“If you push out the commuters, that will mean local industry losing jobs etc.”

Once the results of the consultation are examined, the town council hope to address the concerns at a meeting in the middle of February.

Last week the leader of BTC, Cllr Alan Walters, told the Bucks Free Press once this current consultation process has finished a third phase will look at parking in Wattleton Road as well as near Beaconsfield High School, The Beaconsfield School and Butlers Court School.
