The safety of wheelchair users could be at risk by the proposed new one-way system next to a doctor’s surgery if a new development is to go ahead, a patient of more than three decades believes.

Although permission and guidance is still being sought for a new office and residential development in Beaconsfield Old Town, the people behind the plans would like to see a one-way system put in allowing cars to enter and leave at two-points in London End.

These plans were criticised by Old Town resident John Page during the meeting though, as he voiced concerns for disabled patients exiting the Millbarn Medical Centre against incoming traffic.

Questioning developers, he asked: “The drive in between the chemist and the doctors is going to be one-way and there are people who go to the medical centre who use wheelchairs, both hand-driven and mechanical, are they supposed to use the one-way system?”

Daniel Jones told Mr Page this was not the case, but it would not be detrimental to pedestrians because cars are currently allowed to enter on either road creating more danger for pedestrians.

But, Mr Page added: “You don’t have problems now because a few people using the medical centre are going there for health reasons.

“There are going to be 40 cars going in and out of the offices who will have no interest in the medical centre at all, they just want to go do their work and get off again, that is a very different sort of person instead of people driving to go to see the doctor.”

Mr Jones replied: “It is a very valid point, one-way will help that, at least everyone going in and out will know which way the cars are going.

“Secondly we would use surfacing materials which are more pedestrian-speed friendly than vehicular, so it will be absolutely clear that it’s a pedestrianised area as well as vehicular.

“There are surfaces which make it very clear to cars that you drive very slowly, this can all be managed and regulated and it will be a lot safer than it is today.”
