A village residents association hopes an “urban sprawl” will be avoided by choosing to show their support for a planned development of more than 100 homes on a brownfield site, only if a wanted area of green land is left untouched.

The former Glory Mill site in Park Avenue, Wooburn Green, is subject to an ongoing planning application to build “a mix of houses, town houses and apartments of up to 129 units with associated works and infrastructure.”

Although there have been a number of objections, the Wooburn Residents Association will show its support if land at the other end of the village is not developed.

Slate Meadow was recently given the green light for construction from Wycombe District Council with their Local Plan suggesting 175 homes could be built on it.

However, the land partly falls on the floodplain and was once in the greenbelt and has seen a number of residents stand-up against the prospect of a large development there.

Chris Baker, the outgoing chairman of the WRA, said: “During our recent meeting we discussed the idea of a development on the brownfield site and we said we are for it, with reservations.

“Our main concern is this village becoming an urban sprawl and we are totally against development at both ends of the village.

“In principle we are giving our approval to this proposal for Glory Mill but we want to qualify this with our objections towards other developments and we would really like to have a better look at these plans.”

The Save Slate Meadow group have been against any development in the village and had recently stated that they hoped further development on industrial and brownfield sites would be subtracted from any housing on green space.

Mr Baker added: “Everyone knows there are concerns of developing on Slate Meadow and if we had to choose between a large development on green space or a brownfield site, we would prefer they looked at brownfield.”
