Wycombe council tax: what you'll pay

WYCOMBE District Council approved a 1.75 per cent increase on its part of the council tax tonight after rejecting a freeze.

The move by the Conservative-controlled authority means the average increase for a band D home will be from £124.77 to £126.99 for the 12 months from April. It gets about 10 per cent of the final bill.

County, fire, police and parish councils get the rest of the cash. Click the link at the bottom of this story to see how much you will pay.

Opposition Liberal Democrats put forward a council tax freeze but this was voted down by 31 to eight with one abstention.

Lib Dem leader Councillor Brian Pollock suggested taking £148,000 from council reserves, leaving £2m, to allow a freeze. He said the group would not shy away from future increases.

Yet he said: “People are still suffering. Even any increase at all will make a difference for them.”

Labour group leader and Micklefield councillor Margaret Draper said: “Many of my residents say ‘I don’t know what we will do if the council tax goes up’.”

But Conservative Councillor David Shakespeare said the plan ‘shows no understanding of how local government is financed’.

He said another one-off cost would have to be found the following year, when cash support from Government is expected to be low.

Cllr Shakespeare said: “This is a foolhardy proposal that would hit residents really really hard in one year’s time.”

And fellow party member Cllr Tony Green branded the call ‘irresponsible’.

He said: “Those in control have a responsibility that you in opposition can neglect which is to look at future years as well as the year we are in.”

Council leader Lesley Clarke accused the opposition of proposing ‘reckless spending’.

She said: “We acknowledge that there are people here in our district who are finding it difficult.”

Government cash support to WDC was ‘the lowest possible increase’ of 0.5 per cent, £50,000, said Councillor Roger Wilson, cabinet member for finance.

The future settlement was expect to be ‘the worst in our history’ with a cut of up to 10.5 per cent, he added.

The authority had saved millions, for example by cutting jobs, and Cllr Wilson said a £600,000 ‘transformation fund’ would back ideas that save cash.

He said 1.75 per cent is the ‘lowest increase we can sensibly afford to pass on to our residents’.

Cllr Wilson said the increase for some would be ‘very hard to swallow’.

He said: “We wish it could be lower and will work to ensure further increases will be low.”

I wonder what the Tories say of their colleagues in Maidenhead who CUT their Council Tax.
Yet again there was an opportunity for Wycombe Tories to reduce the level of tax and they refuse.
Well done to the Lib Dems for attempting to keep our Council Tax down.
That is 2 years running now that the Conservatives have increased council Tax by more than what was necessary.

Amazing it seems - since 1997 - Council Tax bills have increased well over 110% under labour - will it be any different under the Conservatives if they win? How is it that things have got so expensive since 1997 - it just does not make sense? The Council Tax bill is so disproportionate - how have things got so expensive since 1997 - to justify this massive increase - I am sure most people will agree that they would rather be paying the 1997 Council Tax rate than today’s extortionate rate!

The council are very proud of the fact that they have saved millions by putting people out of work!
~
Now they have to raise the council tax rate. So what is they nmonmey being spent on?
~
They have to raise £500,000 to pay for the "consultation" over the new stadium! Not the building of, not the maintenance of the stadium, but the "consultation" which could result in a rejection of the idea. So money spent for nothing!
~
They need to find the money to pay outside experts and consultants, who are no doubt friends and business colleagues of councillors and Steve Hayes.
~
Think of that when you pay your council tax bill next.

What may also alarm people is :
Cleveland Council receive some of our tax money to support their locals!!
Hants council tax payers fund people in Liverpool etc ... Bucks is an affluent area, you would however expect all of our tax money to be pumped into our area to fund our services (which are pretty naff, lets face it) however due to living in an affluent area not ALL of our tax money goes back into it .... have a look on the internet and see what you can find out, it amazed me!!
Bucks NHS and Bucks CC are diabolical, they are constantly stating that due to lack of funds they are unable to do this that and the other ... now I have an understanding as to why!!

That it two votes the Tories have missed out on in the forthcoming and all further elections.

I was counting on the Council Tax being frozen this year. Funny that one council can actually afford to "reduce" their council tax while the one literally next to it cannot even agree on a freeze.

The council bosses must be licking their lips for HUUUUGE bonuses !!!

And very soon you will start receiving election leaflets claiming that the Conservatives are the party of lower taxes!

If the Conservatives stopped wasting money then we could have been enjoying a tax cut this year like residents in Maidenhead.
