Pubs in Wooburn Green 'threatened' by neighbours complaints

THE survival of three pubs in Wooburn Green is being threatened by neighbours' complaints about noise and live music, say landlords.

The Queen and Albert pub on The Green recently received a 'noise abatement notice' from Wycombe District Council, after “raised voices, shouting and screaming” were reported by residents.

Landlord Carl Quarterman has also had complaints from neighbours about his live band nights on Friday and Saturday nights.

He said: “Since the complaints came in I've cancelled bands to show some goodwill, but it means I've only had something on once a week recently.

“Last week the takings were down enormously. I'm trying to be fair but this is threatening us as a business.

“This pub was absolutely dead for two years, so I started putting on live music and karaoke and the people came. It's the only way the pub will survive.”

Nearby on The Green, The Red Cow pub has received complaints about noise and the landlord confirmed they prompted him to cancel two music nights in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, The Red Lion, opposite The Queen & Albert, also said residents' complaints were having a negative impact on trade.

Mr Quarterman is licensed to serve drinks and play music until 1am on Friday and Saturday nights, but said he shuts the garden at 11.30pm and turns the music off at midnight.

Council warnings and neighbours complaints must be taken seriously by pubs, otherwise the licence could be affected, he said.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: “From a wider perspective, I cannot see that granting late licences or live music licences to pubs in this conservation area is desirable, sensible or sustainable.

“However, I also sympathise with the pub owners and landlords who struggle to make a living these days and have no choice but to market themselves with promotions and events to bring in the customers.

“Carl has also been proactive by calling a meeting to discuss matters with myself and other neighbours. We are very grateful for his initiative and feel it is a positive step.”

Wycombe District Council said the noise abatement notice “acts as a formal reminder of their need to have due consideration for their neighbours when it comes to noise levels”.

A pub has hours it keeps and applies for a perfoming rights licence. They exist to entertain so I can see no breech of licencing laws. If you live next to a chippy dont complain about the smell of food. Its life take it as that. How dreary it would be without it

Buy a house next to a pub - what do these nutters expect? Peace and tranquility??
Wrongly, (VERY BLOODY WRONGLY) the law takes the side of the resident. BFP - This needs highlighting, it's absolute madness.

These "pubgoers"obviously like to make a noise and disturb other people, they just don't care. It's a case of I'm all right Jack and stuff everyone else. I was brought up to respect other people, they weren't. Grow up and show some respect.

How about everyone have fun with great music and then go home at 2300hrs???

After midnight half of the pub going public turn into total louts...shame the landlords don't stop serving drinks to those that have had enough.

Maybe they got jobs and think everyone should be entitled to at least 6 hours sleep a night?

It's quite probable the complaints come from people that live several doors away from the pub...

I bet if these pub goers were woken up next day at 0600hrs they'd throw a fit!

Just because the pub was there first it does not mean they can ignore the noise problem. If they received a noise abatement notice then clearly the noise is too much and over the limits for what is acceptable in the early hours. They can actually have their longer hour license withdrawn so it is down to them to sort it out.

Why not try having the music on earlier in the evening and finishing earlier say 11pm? It is really not acceptable in a residential area to have loud music at 1am and it is not needed either to save a business. There are other ways to have a good, decent pub without upsetting the residents.

part of the reason for extra noise is all the smokers are now outside. i frequent a pub in Wycombe that has a similar problem whereby residents are complaining about noise and the sad truth is the noise is from those that have been forced to smoke outside, allow smoking back into pubs and that could help

Nobody force them to go to the pub neither but they have a choice. When you have beer you want a cigarete also.
The pub can give next door ear plugs for free. I have some and they give you nice sleep.

Erm is everyone forgetting the huge group of yobs that hang around Wooburn green everynight shouting and screaming? Particularly worse on weekends. Last weekend they stole the papers from Tesco's and set them of fire. I'd say this is worse than people having a drink and banter. I live right on the green and get abuse shouted at me by the yobs. I have never had any problems with the pub goers and think if you live near a pub thats your issue. It's the yobs screaming obsenities and running into the road etc. that need sorting.

The difference is that the louts will tell the Council where to go, those that are law-abiding will bend over and take whatever the Council gives them and for as long as they keep taking it. We need the Magistrates back not the officialdom and fines from Councils many of whom have trouble understanding and following the law themselves let alone administering it.

Most people accept the music until midnight. The problem is the drunken mobs who then cause problems for residents. I know it's not the licensee's responsibility, but it is more likely that is what people are complaining about. Also if they have already been served notices, they are exceeding acceptable levels. That's not the fault of the residents either. There is nothing worse than a **** up cretin who fails to see why anyone would want to spoil their fun, is there?

Ok, here's the truth behind the noise from my pub The Queen & Albert(The Steps). When I arrived here last November trade was very quiet and needed a boost, so I started to put on live music and karaoke nights to bring people in and make a living. It was slow to start with but after 2 or 3 months things picked up and trade is now good. During what has been a warm summer people tend to stand out the pub so that they can smoke and enjoy banter with other customers, this is when the initial problem with noise arose. Too many people enjoying themselves did start to escalate, I was aware of the noise created by people having fun. So I decided to close the back garden of the pub at 11.30 so as not to offend the neighbours. I have notices both inside and outside the pub telling people to keep the noise down, I also spend the evening walking amongst my patrons making sure they keep the noise down whilst still enjoying themselves. I also now close the bar at 12.30 instead of 1.00 in an effort to send people home earlier, this seems to be working.
Regarding the noise from the music itself, I had only had one complaint in 9 months, this was my fault as I forget to close a window. I now make sure all windows and doors are closed during live music, even when it's extremley hot in the pub.
HOWEVER, three weeks ago I got new next door neighbours who complained about the music after their first night in the property.(they knew what I did for entertainment before they bought the house) I responded by experimenting in only having music one evening a week instead of two, unfortunatley my takings dropped significantly, so it's back to Fridays and Saturdays for the music nights. I will start the music earlier and will finnish earlier, one hour before I have too.
I have written support from many of my neighbours who have no problem with the volume of the music, I have also invited my neighbours to join me for a drink to discuss any problems they may have. This meeting takes place at the pub on Monday 6th September at 8pm.
There are more problems caused by teenagers hanging out outside Tescos, damaging property and staring fires, this is where the authorities should be targetting.
I am doing my best to entertain and keep the peace at the same time.

perhaps you should review your son's and his friends ethics and value for othres rather than blaming the lack of things to do for the yoof problem- the police will only be on their back if they are casung trouble- the police have better things to do that deal with problem yoof

at 16 i didn't sit on street corners hassling people and setting fire to bins etc- I got off my backside and did something useful (voluntary and paid work!)- a bit less "woe is me" and bit more responsibility. Young? they could be in a full time job at 16!!

why dont you organise something for them ?

as for the pub noise- I can appreciate the problems, but at the end of the day, if the pub can't make the landlord a living and pay his bills, then it will close!
eventually we will only have a handful of pubs left - imagine how busy they will be on sunny summer days

especialy when people move in next door to a pub and complain about it- I have always worked on the basis that if was there before i moved in i have no right of complaint!

Same thing happened to my local pub a few years ago - new neighbours objected to the juke box noise coming through the walls (pub didn't even have one!) and WDC took enforcement action. Luckily for the future of the pub these idiots sold up and moved, the new people bought the house knowing there was a pub the other side of the wall and things have been fine since.
The law is an ****.

Most of the people who frequent the pubs on the green are local people and are showing support for the the pubs when music is on. They all pay their council tax and as such have rights as well .The people who have purchased houses next to pubs have done so with that knowledge and the price they paid reflected that.

Lets not kill live music on the green

Fair play to the landlord at least he is trying to find the middle road rather than stick 2 fingers up and carry on, maybe the whingers should take him up on his offer and have a drink and chat about how best to move on. A great idea but I bet all you yoghurt knitters refuse the hand of comprimise.

Do you not wonder why the police are on their backs? They hang around in the doorway of tesco's being rude to innocent shoppers, they give the poor shop assistants abuse. They make a mess by throwing litter and setting fire to things. Why should something be organised for them? They have parents, why can't they arrange something. Some of those kids are only 15/16 or younger. Why are they out so late at night? When I was that age nothing was organised for me but I didn't hang around intimidating people and being generally rude and obnoxious nor did I deface public property. These pubs and shops are all trying to make a living. If they close, there is still going to be major problems on the Green. Has anyone complained about these teenagers sitting in their cars playing really loud music and beeping their horns constantly? If these pubs shut, the local residents are going to see how bad things really are on the Green and realise the problems are not the pubs at all.

Your so right! I am sick to death of those d**k teenagers. They are a far greater pain than the pubs. The council should get their head out their arse and deal with the real problem.
I'm firmly with you on this point.
