LIBERAL Democrat MPs will be urged to oppose what students call an 'outrageous' rise in tuition fees, by a leading member of the party in Buckinghamshire.

Councillor Steve Guy, who contested the Wycombe seat at the General Election, has backed Bucks Students' Union.

He says many Lib Dems nationwide are angry at the Coalition's decision.

The cap on fees will rise to £6,000 from £3,225, with some universities possibly able to charge £9,000.

But a graduate will not have to repay their loan until earning £21,000 – up from £15,000 - which the Government say is fairer.

Many Lib Dem candidates, including Cllr Guy, signed a pledge to vote against any rise in the payments.

Cllr Steve Guy, Lib Dem leader at Wycombe District Council, said: “If I had been elected as the MP for Wycombe I would be sticking by that pledge and joining fellow Liberal Democrats such as Charles Kennedy and Sir Menzies Campbell who are all planning to oppose the measure.”

“Our newly elected Conservative MP for Wycombe (Steve Baker) has a duty to represent local students and he should listen to their views and vote against the increase.”

Wycombe Liberal Democrats' executive recently supported a motion put forward by agent Ian Morton and seconded by Buckinghamshire County Councillor Julia Wassell which said Lib Dem MPs should stick to their pledge.

A Lib Dem regional conference on October 30 overwhelmingly backed the motion. Callum Morton, Student Union President at Amersham & Wycombe College, spoke against the rise.

Cllr Guy said: “The huge majority that our motion received shows that many Liberal Democrat members across the region are angry with the decision made by the coalition to increase fees.

“Just as we fought against Labour's introduction of tuition fees so we will fight against this increase.”

Cllr Guy will write to all Lib Dem MPs asking them to vote against the increase and said Bucks students should write to MP Steve Baker to do the same.
