A former Liberal Democrat councillor is to stand as the Green Party's candidate for the General Election later this year.

Gill Walker, a former representative of Chesham Town Council and Chiltern District Council, has been announced as the Greens' Parliamentary candidate for the Chesham and Amersham constituency.

The mother-of-five stepped down from her role on the town council to assist her husband's business when he fell ill.

She said she used her time away from the council to reflect on which political party she should be affiliated to.

Mrs Walker said the Green Party's main concerns in the Chiltern district are improving transport links and supporting a more sustainable economy.

She said: "I believe the Green Party is the only party that seeks to address the major issues facing society by recognising their interdependency upon one another is the key to fairer and more sustainable world.

"I very much enjoy living in Chesham with its selection of independently run shops and local businesses, local theatre, leisure facilities, parks and open spaces."

Mrs Walker has lived in Chesham since 1989 and has worked as manager of the town's Oxfam shop and as a Youth and Community Worker for the Chesham Youth Centre.

She will be standing against current Conservative MP Cheryl Gillan, Labour candidate Ben Davies and Alan Stevens of UKIP.
