Shoppers in Chesham High Street were left rubbing their eyes in disbelief at seeing Wonder Woman flying through the sky.

She was spotted floating several feet up in the air over the streets of the town over the Easter weekend.

But there was a perfectly logical explanation - it was the president of the town's Rotary Club leaping into action to raise money for charity.

Helen Salisbury elected to don her fancy dress costume as a way of inspiring more passers-by to donate to the total being raised.

She and her fellow Rotarians had helped set up a giant zip line in High Street and members of the public were invited to slide down it - or nominate someone else to take part - in exchange for a donation towards the Hospice of St Francis charity.

The Berkhamsted-based hospice, which cares for patients in south Bucks, is one of the charities being supported this year by Chesham's Mayor Mohammad Fayyaz, who also had a turn on the zip wire.

But it was club president Mrs Salisbury who stole the show with her colourful costume - and her efforts ensured more than £1,500 was raised for the hospice.

She said: "I thought what daft thing could I do to make it more interesting and exciting, so I went as Wonder Woman.

"People kept on sponsoring me to do it and in the end I went down 35 times. I was there for nearly five hours because so many people kept paying me to go down. I was going up and down like a yo-yo."

Asked if she had done anything like this before, Mrs Salisbury said: "I have been on a bigger one before, so this was no problem, but it was something a bit different."
