Chesham Town Council could be a family affair after the next round of elections - with a mother and daughter standing against each other in the same ward.

Mary Shaw and daughter Beth are both hoping to be elected onto the council in the Ridgeway ward as members of the Conservative party.

They will be standing against the two incumbent independent candidates, Derek Lacey and Peter Yerrell.

Meanwhile former town mayor Mark Shaw - Mary's husband and Beth's dad - is seeking re-election to the council in the Vale ward.

He said: "Politics runs very strongly in our family. Not only did I work for the Conservative party for 20 years, but my wife worked in politics, as did her father. Beth has shown a great interest - it's a bit of a family thing.

"They are both very keen and been out delivering leaflets.

"It's the ward we live in and they are hoping to do as well as they can do, although they are up against two very well known independents."

The Shaws aren't the only family where more than one member is seeking to get voted onto Chesham Town Council however.

Alison Pirouet, another former mayor, is contesting the Vale ward on behalf of the Liberal Democrats, while son Thomas is seeking election in the Hilltop ward.

Lib Dem Patricia Cherrill is also fighting for the Vale ward, with husband Terry contesting the Newtown seat.
