Webcam bid to beat recycling centre queues

11:10am Monday 1st March 2010

LIVE pictures of household recycling sites are to be beamed across the internet in a bid to beat queues.

Buckinghamshire County Council today announced webcams will be installed at sites including High Heavens in High Wycombe.

It is hoped residents will view the cameras on the internet to see if there are queues – and then go to another site to beat traffic.

Councillor Martin Tett, the cabinet member responsible for waste, said: “It is really great and shows real customer focus and commitment to improving things.”

He said: “One of the great under-utilised assets we have as a county council is our website. It has fantastic potential if we utilise it properly.”

Council leader David Shakespeare said the move means ‘the public gets a real tangible benefit’.

Many drivers at High Heavens could visit the site at the London Road, Beaconsfield, for example, said Councillor Lin Hazell at this morning’s meeting of the BCC cabinet.

The council’s sites are:

•London Road East, Amersham HP7 9DT.

•College Road North, Aston Clinton HP22 5EZ.

•Rabans Close, Rabans Lane, Aylesbury HP19 8RS.

•A40 London Road, Lower Pyebushes, Beaconsfield HP9 2XB.

•Wigans Lane, Bledlow Ridge HP14 4BH.

•Yonder Slade, Buckingham Industrial Park, Buckingham MK18 1RZ.

•Crowpiece Lane, Burnham SL2 3TG.

•Latimer Road, Chesham HP5 1TL.

•High Heavens, Clay Lane, Booker, High Wycombe SL7 3DJ.

•Langley Park Road, Langley SL3 6DD.

Live cameras are increasingly being used by public services.

Live cameras from motorways have been made available from The Highways Agency, for example. Click the link below to view (tick traffic camera box).

The cabinet also heard today that the authority is looking at using text messaging for mobile phones more, for example sending messages to people about their use of social services.

Yet Cllr Valerie Letheren said: "There are people out there who are not computer literate who like speaking to people face to face."
