Amersham and Chesham MP calls for urgent pothole action

AN MP has called for a transport boss to prioritise filling in potholes in her constituency following hundreds of complaints.

Cheryl Gillan met with Buckinghamshire County Council's cabinet member for transport Val Letheren on Friday to raise concerns put forward by her constituents in Amersham and Chesham.

Mrs Gillan will be going out with a road repair crew next week to see first hand the work being carried out to fix the county's road network, after several potholes appeared following this winter's freezing weather.

She had requested Friday's meeting with Cllr Lethern not only to reflect the growing concerns of her many constituents, but also after her own experiences driving the length and breadth of the constituency.

Mrs Gillan said: “I am delighted that Cllr Letheren has realised the importance of repairing these roads as rapidly as possible and she has indicated to me that she has recognised the strength of my concerns about the dangers posed to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians alike.

“I look forward to receiving the new schedule of repair for potholes in Chesham and Amersham from Buckinghamshire County Council."

She added she “appreciated the huge difficulty” faced by the road repair crews.

During the meeting Mrs Gillan was told the patching process has been further affected by the wet weather, which reduces its effectiveness.

An extra £2million has been spent this year on the council's pothole budget and the number of gangs repairing roads has increased from six to 20.

Cllr Letheren said it was not a "confrontational" meeting adding: "I was able to share the problems we have and Cheryl will be going out with one of our teams on Monday to see how they work.

"It was useful for her to share the concerns of her constituents but we explained that we have to deal with the most dangerous pot holes first."

Election coming, want to be seen to be active. If the conservative party had invested in maintaining our roads correctly we wouldnt be in this sorry state, instead they were too interested in lining their pockets with 28.5% pay rises.

Ok so it takes Gillan to tell Captain of transport Letheren to sort there act out and get these pot holes sorted. What the hell is Gillan doing going out with the pot hole crew anyway? Surely Letheren should be doing this?

Why does this woman think that the potholes in her area are any more important, or should be prioritised over other areas???

The council should have dealt with all the large potholes as the bad weather that caused most of them happened weeks ago now. Why are they not carrying out their duties to repair the roads as they should? If they can’t do a full repair straight way they should at least do a temporary repair that will last a few months.

We will have to be careful or the road crews will start getting upset by all the adverse comments...

I travelled to Great Malvern last week and once I left Bucks the roads were in a reasonable state of repair even the roads in the Malvern hills were in a better state than the roads in Bucks. If this council stopped wasting tax payers money on stadiums & athletic tracks there would be funds for essential services
