Duo aim to put Chesham on cake making map

SPONGY moist delights are the focus of a fledgling Chesham business aiming to rise above the recession.

Duo Julie Johnson, 42, and Jean Allen, 37, are hoping to put Chesham on the cake baking map.

On Saturday they launched their new company Sunshine Cakes.

Julie, of Two Gates Lane, Bellingdon, said she nurtured her artistic talents at art college, and now wants to bring that to the cake making table.

She said: “At the beginning of the year, we were thinking what can we do? It’s something I wanted to do for a long time and when the idea came up we thought lets grab it.

“We both love cooking, we are always making cakes for the children and everything. Also we really feel there’s a gap out there for the gluten and wheat free which we offer because there’s an awful lot of children out there with allergies.”

Jean, who has a background in catering, said: “ It’s really exciting and quite liberating. We wanted to begin in Spring which is a new beginning and with things coming up like Mothers day, more than because of the economy.”

They said their products, made at Julie’s home, are ‘affordable bespoke cakes’.

The pair said seeing reactions such as an elderly man, who cried with joy when he saw the special cake we made for him, made it worthwhile.

They said one of the most unusual ideas for a cake so far came from a resident trying to make peace with a neighbour over a dispute about a garden shed.

The householder wanted a cake designed like a garden shed which they hoped to leave on the door step as an 'olive branch'.

The business partners said they aim to make cakes for all occasions.

The pair also hope to run courses for aspiring cake makers.
