AN MP today hailed road repair gangs in south Bucks as an “emergency service” after seeing them in action.

Cheryl Gillan praised the teams who have filled in 10,000 potholes in the south of the county in the last two months, after roads started breaking up following the cold winter.

The Amersham and Chesham MP watched as a three-man crew worked to fill in two Category One holes – the most serious – on London Road in Amersham this afternoon.

The team had started work at 4am today gritting the roads after overnight temperatures dipped to as low as minus four degrees, before getting to work filling in the holes.

Mrs Gillan said: “I hope people can see there's a human side to doing this job. They don't realise the size of the task.

“They are an emergency service for the roads at the moment. Instead of brickbats, we should be saying, 'Thank you very much' to them.

“I didn't realise it took so much. They are doing a real job on our roads.”

Mrs Gillan attended the pothole filling with Cllr Val Letheren, Buckinghamshire County Council's cabinet member for transport.

She said: “This has been an education for me and I have satisfied myself there's a lot of work being done.”

On average council teams fill in 5,000-6,000 potholes every year.
