A FAMILY butcher will appear tonight on the popular BBC television show hosted by the Hairy Bikers.

Roy Gigg, whose business is based in Cookham Parade, Cookham, is set for a moment of fame after being chosen by the best-selling cook book writers to feature on their latest series Everyday Gourmets.

In time of economic restraints, Si King and Dave Myers aim to show viewers that tasty gourmet food is possible at a low budget every Wednesday at 8pm, on BBC Two.

Mr Gigg, who owns Roy Gigg Butchers, inherited the business, which started in 1959, from his father Peter.

He said: “I don’t know how they found out about me or my business; I was very surprised when I got the call.”

But Mr Gigg took the idea on board and hopes his appearance on the show may bring people’s awareness back to butchery and its advantages.

He said: “It’s understandable a lot of people will go for supermarkets nowadays because you get all under one roof and it’s convenient for the busy couples.

“But it’s nice to think butcher days could be coming back because of the advices we can give to people on tasty and cheap cuts of meat.

“That is the only way we can compete with the supermarkets, and hopefully this show will help us by showing the customer relationship we can build.”

The Cookham butcher revealed a lot of his regulars, some locals others from as far away as Reading, have been with him for over 30 years.

He said: “We don’t get a lot of young people, still seems to be a thing of the older generation, but I like to think we can still change that.”

During the show Mr Gigg was asked to prepare a whole chicken and demonstrated how to bone, debone and roll the bird.

“We don’t normally charge to do that, but these are things people can learn to do at home, as well as using the leftover bones for stock,” said Mr Gigg.
