HEROES from Britain's armed forces are to celebrated next month at a special event - and organisers are appealing to you to nominate veterans for a new award.

For the first time, as part of Armed Forces Day, Bucks will crown its Veteran of the Year.

The gong is for those who have fought in conflicts and who have also made an outstanding commitment to voluntary work within the community.

Veterans who have served in the Royal Air Force, Army, Marines or Royal Navy, and who live in Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes are eligible for nomination.

Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher, Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, said: "Armed Forces Day is a great opportunity for residents of the whole county to express gratitude to serving personnel, veterans, volunteer reserves, war widows, cadets and their families.

"I'd urge strong support for our Veteran of the Year campaign to honour the unsung heroes among us."

Armed Forces Day, organised by Buckinghamshire Lieutenancy, Buckinghamshire County Council and Milton Keynes Council, will be an eight-hour celebration and funday on June 29, starting at 1pm and closing at 9pm.

It will be packed with air displays, live music, arena events, a funfair, outdoor activities.

Online nomination forms can be found on: www.buckscc.gov.uk/armedforcesday or forms can be obtained from Hugh Ashton-Moore, of The Royal British Legion, on: 01494 510 071. Closing day for nominations is May 31.
