MYSTERIOUS lights in the night sky have left residents in High Wycombe and Chesham wondering if there just might be life beyond the stars.

A number of strange bright lights have been spotted in south Bucks skies in recent days and it remains a mystery as to just what they might be.

Reports of the weird lights have also been discussed on radio station Mix 107 and radio controller for the station Andy Muir was one of those who spotted the lights last Saturday evening at around 11pm.

Andy said: "I live in Totteridge and from the top of the hill I noticed eight or nine lights over West Wycombe late on Saturday night. They were moving very slowly until they got really dim and disappeared. They weren't moving like anything else I've seen."

Just a few days earlier, last Thursday at around 10.30pm, an unusual sighting also caught the eye of Duncan Lund from Waterside in Chesham who emailed the Star a photo, pictured right, of what he could see.

Duncan said: "I was out in the back garden when I saw two glowing orange lights. I don't know how else to describe them. It could be anything but I think I'm still sceptical, but it is certainly like nothing I have seen before."

Mr Lund also described that the lights were moving across towards the Amersham area at a very slow pace.

However, any ideas that friendly little green men look set to visit Bucks in the near future have been dismissed by Paul Millington, chairman of Wycombe Astronomical Society.

He said:" Something that is described as moving slowly could be a planet which is not uncommon at this time of year and it is likely it could be Jupiter or Mars. Another possibility is that people may have spotted space satellites. It doesn't sound like E.T is on his way for a visit."

Marmite, next Mayor of Wycombe said of the people who reported the lights "They were obviously drunk or on some sort of drugs. This would be stamped out under my regime. Another possiblity is that they are all compulsive liers and feel the need to make up these claims to be noticed."

Whilst planets do move slowly to us normally they do not look like they are moving at all because the movement is so far away. People would have reported it more staying still and perhaps moving over several hours. I am sure most people know what a planet looks like. I don't know of any planets at the moment which have 2 lights on them.

Its more likely to be some kind of balloon or blimp. In the extreme, it could of course be a UFO of the alien kind, I won't ever dismiss that sort of thing as its possible, however weird it may seem.

I too have seen strange lights that have no explanation in the wycombe area, they are on the London Road and Oxford Road!
Scary stuff!

they are on the London Road and Oxford Road!

Maybe they were stuck at the traffic lights

It would have been nice if the UFO’s had landed in Wycombe but I fear the town centre parking charged would probably have driven them away!

Why all the negative comments? Do you people not want to believe there is other life out there? I sure hope something has come to extinguish the scum of High Wycombe! (Don't take that personally, it's a joke) :-P :-D

If you can't prove what it is, then it is, by definition a UFO (= UNIDENTIFIED Flying Object). But of course that implies nothing at all about whether it might have been an alien space ship.

I believe in UFOs there must be a better place out there in the universe cos this world stinks!

I saw similar with my mum one summers evening, about 10 years ago, from downley looking towards lane end's sky. It was one of the most weirdest things we have ever seen. Never found out what it was, looked up, to see if any info was about to see if west wycombe was having any laser nights etc. But nothing.Very strange. I sure we are not the only beings in the universe. However, i often wonder with all the ufo sightings around the world and years since, why none of these ufo's had made contact with the place they are spotted??

We also noticed these lights on Saturday evening there were 9 of them, my husband suggested that they may have been released by Disraeli House and were ballons with a night light in them

well we have a multicultural society in Wycombe so I guess it was inevitable that the Martians would want to move here next.

at least you would expect martians to be able to contibute to society with their advanced technology and space gold. Rather than leach off the state, get plastic surgery on the national health and kill people by not being able to read and driving buses.

My wife and I got back from the Womad festival on Saurday night where we had seen a stream of candle balloons being set off and while we were unloading the car, back home, we saw another load being set off from what looked like the Pinewood Road area. Here's a photo of one I found http://www.bbc.co.uk

Its just gone midnight and I have just seen about 10 of these from the totteridge area. They were grouped with about 3 or 4 together, bright orange and moving steadily across the sky. I followed them up to the kingswood area and then they disappeared. I cant think of any logical explanation for what they were

I have also seen 4 of these flying over chesham tonight at sbout 11pm. Have we been invaded?? teehee
They were coming over from the chesham town centre area north towards us at nashleigh hill. They were flying quite fast and looked liked orange dome shaped objects.. They went up and down in height and flew right inot the distance until we couldn't see them. This is so exciting!

I saw 3 orange bright lights last night about 11 45pm. I looked out my window and saw 3. The 3rd one was moving weirdly and went down into the valley and looked as if it went near Powwow and the McMinn centre. This is deffinantly not a planet. It came infront of the horizon. I didnt get tht on video but I got them floating in the sky on video.
I have a good view accross the waterside area and of the valley.

They were more than likely from someone firing a naval flare!

Naval flare! Dont be daft. I saw these strange lights again tonight at about 11pm over chesham. 1 came over and then another 2 pretty much together. Amazing to watch! They went over the valley of waterside towards amersham until they disappeared. Im fasinated by them. I have read people think they are sky lanterns. They certainly dont look like balloons of any kind to me.
