UFOs - the argument continues

EXTRA TERRESTRIAL enthusiasts could be sent back down to earth with a bump if the latest claims dismissing UFOs are anything to go by.

In recent weeks numerous sky watchers have been sending in pictures and recounting their tales of red glowing lights and strange unidentifiable flying objects better known as UFOs.

However, two teenage party girls have revealed that they believe all the fuss was created by Chinese lanterns they used at two birthday parties in Maidenhead.

Charlotte Green, 22, and Jessica Bunyan, 23, held two birthday celebrations with family and friends on July 28 and then the following weekend on August 4.

At both parties held at Jessica's home in Malvern Road, Maidenhead, the girls released Chinese lanterns and they now believe they are the cause of the fuss.

Charlotte said: "The lanterns we used glowed really brightly and we released about 12 of them, I think some of them drifted across in the Wycombe direction. I just know that it must have been the lanterns that people saw. It's quite funny."

The ET-like lights were first spotted on July 26 and 29 in Chesham but many people believe the latest sightings have been candle balloons let off at events around the county.

Charlotte added: "I'm pretty open minded and I guess if that is what people want to believe then it's up to them, and I could see why they might have thought the lights were unusual."

However, UFO spotters have hit back and claim the sightings are the real deal. Jonathan, 23, from Totteridge who sent in the images when he spotted a glowing ball on August 12, said: "This thing remained frozen for five minutes, then began to move slowly away and no it wasn't a flare or a balloon. It was an orange coloured ball to the naked eye but upon zooming in it took on a new form. I'm quite a sceptical person but I do think there might be things out there that are not common knowledge whether that be something paranormal or something else. The truth is out there, a few miles down the road."

Whilst Sebastian Bird, 17 who spotted strange lights on Saturday August 4 said: "The thing that amazes me the most is when we watched them they didn't appear to come from anywhere. They were just there and then they just disappeared. I don't think a candle balloon can do that."

Oh of course, and these two ladies have just made themselves known to BFP have they? How amazingly convenient BFP! Still, should keep the story line chugging along until next week's A-Level supplement. When are you going to hit us with the truth about the puma then: it's really Mrs Slocombe's p*ssy isn't it? Go on tell us!

these girls just want to see their name in print, how sad!

Well personally knowing both of these girls, I very much doubt they actually give a rats behind as to whether or not they get their names in print, I think they just wanted to give a rational explanation for this load of old tosh.
What I find most amusing is that they're referred to as teenage party girls just before their ages are given. Spot on bit of editing there.

Well....being one of the 'girls/ladies' that people are commenting about I would like to share my thoughts...!
Let's start from the beginning shall we? My friend and I had a party to celebrate our Birthday and released some of these chinese lanterns. Then the following week we saw all the stupid reports about UFO's!!! I couldn't give a Monkeys Chuff about UFO's/or whatever else anyone thought it was, but just found it really funny!! SO I phoned up the BFP to tell them what it was!! As for wanting our names in print (Sue L, from Hazelmere)...if that was true I'm sure we could have come up with something much more entertaining than that! Anyway, next time we have a party we will be sure to pre warn everyone so that none of you crazy freaks think the UFO's are back!!

Ok...lets keep this simple. These WOMEN just wanted to set the record straight because some star gazers thought they had seen some UFO's. They thought it was funnny that people thought there simple chinese lanterns were visitors from another planet. There is no reason for you to come on here and start being rude about them. They were very diplomatic about the people suggesting other opinions and did not ridicule them. Lets end this here.

Many thanks

In response to Sue L, Hazlemere...
In the original article people were asking for a possible explanation for the recent 'UFO' sightings and we felt we could provide one. It had nothing to do with wanting to see our names in print which, as Jentulman quite rightly pointed out, I couldnt give a toss about!!

Surely you would find it more than a slight coincidence that on two of the evenings these main 'UFO's' were spotted we were releasing some chinese lanterns, at the same time and in the same quantities as stated. These lanterns glide through the air as balls of light then disappear once they are burnt out. Its simple but they can look strange to the unknowing eye.

But let me not be the one to stop you believe these lanterns may actually have been some extra terrestrial life form showing themselves to the good folk of Wycombe and the surrounds, they must be a stupid race if that is the case.

Luckily my feet were firmly on the ground that night (if not slightly wobbly from an excess of wine) and I could appreciate the beautiful sights of those lanterns. As for your feet? Floating in cloud cookoo land comes to mind...

Jessica.

I was at this "party" and whilst drinking my Bucks Free Press sponsored Pimms I thought I cant wait to get my name in print. Oh no wait, I live in the real world and I am just enjoying this very funny and obviously genuine story. The Truth is out there!! (and it's not as synical as you think)

I see there is a bit of hostility from people in maidenhead on this story. Too be honest i think its pretty pathetic. If you are going to release chinese balloons from maidenhead, then obviously the balloon rises to an altitude, where by the time it head towards Wycombe and considering the distance between the 2 places, it reaches at such a high altitude. then yer it can be easily confused as sum unusual light in the sky. Just look at the facts, dont take some people as complete idiots because what they saw.

And why the hell release chinese balloons on 2 parties at the same address. Why chinese latterns, why candles, y do it at night, whats the point in it? Was it fun to release some balloons up into the sky! Did it get you excited! " releasing them was fun". What aload of crap. If they wouldn't of released them, then we wouldn't have this debate on the matter! Dont give everyone grief. Sorry forgot to add it on to the first section.

Just another form of littering. The girls should be issued with on the spot fines.

On the spot fines would be a great idea... for loosers who are sitting in there bedroom watching the sky.

What i find amazing is the fact you are having a go at people for releasing chinese laterns, which i would imagine is a bit more fun than playing with a fisher price telescope.

DaveyBoy2008, if they didn't release them, they might not have a life too!!

releasing chinese lanterns, balloons, whatever into the sky only for them to drop somewhere else and some have to pick them up is littering. It may be fun (to some) but is still results in litter which doesn't look nice and creates a hazard for animals. Those girls should be responsible for clearing them up.

Munnybunny, MAIDENHEAD says...

The chinese/sky lanterns were made from biodegradable materials; mulbery paper and a natural bamboo rim. Believe it or not we thought to check. They pose no risk to the environment or animals. Once they've fallen to the ground the paper will disintegrate and you will be left with something that essentially looks like a twig. Hardly cigarette butts and beer cans...

How long does it take for paper to disintegrate?

Blaidd, USA says...
3:10pm Fri 17 Aug 07

Not long at all, my mom put cardboard on her garden all the time, because it's good for it, and It breaks down in no time at all.

To be honest I'd be more concerned about the impact using a pc all day to ask such inane questions as 'How long does it take for paper to disintegrate?' is having on the environment and your carbon footprint, than what damage an environmentally friendly sky lantern would have...

on the garden? or on the compost heap? Cardboard will breakdown quickly in a compost heap, but not when placed on a garden.

And for your information, my mac is not on specifically to ask inane questions, I do other things on it too.

This whole thing is a set-up by BFP editorial, and not a very sophisticated one. Has someone been standing in for the editor on summer holiday or something?

I dont think a couple of paper lanterns is a big deal from an environmental point of view.

I agree with phish though that balloons are potentially pretty bad especially when let off hundreds at at time. The rubber / plastic can take years to bio- degrade.

The really worrying thing about it all is that there appear to be some people actually believing they were UFOs

I totally agree with Sue in Hazlemere. Having your name printed in the Bucks Free Press is such a lifetime achievement the "ladies" obviously couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Yes sue, it is very sad as you so correctly put it but I cant help but admire their effort and I, like most people on the message board who are just too afraid to admit it, am kicking myself about the fact that I failed to think of this genius plan myself, as having my name in the BFB would mean my life is complete! I think you should all take a long hard look at yourselves and it will soon become clear that these ladies have achieved something most of us never will and that your postings are out of shear jealousy. I think we should honour them and crown August the 4th national CharlotteGreenJessic
aBunyan day. Each year celebrations would take place with the release of Chinese lanterns and to avoid any aggravation of you green types August the 5th can be crowned national CharlotteGreenJessic
aBunyan Litter Pick day. Lets keep everyone happy.
