Library review as book loans fall

LIBRARY users are being urged to have their say as part of a major review spurred by falling books loans.

Buckinghamshire County Council is reviewing its libraries "to look at other options".

A council statement said: "Buckinghamshire has seen a 6.11 per cent fall in loans in the last three years.

"Libraries are not just about book lending, they've been finding ways of attracting new members for years including access to the internet and further education.

"The review will help to find further ways that the libraries can change in order for them to serve the needs of many generations to come."

Residents are being urged by the council to attend the Adults Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee at County Hall, Aylesbury at 0945 on June 4 and July 2.

Alternatively phone, email or write with your comments to Lee Stevens on 01296 387960, lstevens@buckscc.gov.uk, or County Hall, Aylesbury Bucks, HP20 1UY.

Committee chairman Bruce Allen said: "Libraries are an important part of Buckinghamshire's local communities, we need to support them to change to ensure that they can adapt and survive for future generations".

Public libraries have been dumbed down. You will have more chance of finding a Gordon Ramsey bio than Sartre's Nausea these days.

We need to put the Great back into Great Britain by educating a new generation of intellectual warriors willing to challenge authority and the regime.

Wycombe Riots '08 will make Paris '68 look like a chimps tea party.

Come on BSc Bed Sellers at Bucks Unitversity, are you with me? This is your alarm call!

On second thoughts, stick with the Ramsey bio kids....

Considering how times are changing and technology is so different now, I'm surprised the drop is so low! I don't think it's too much to worry about.

If you look at how the demographic of Wycombe has changed in recent years it's not that surprising. If there are so many people who cannot read/write English then they are never going to use a library unless it has something to attract them.

If we start filling our shelves with non-English books then we are not helping people become good UK citizens. Let's help people become part of our community, not create their own exclusive communities. What about free English lessons, English coursework books, etc?

I use the internet and I do tend to buy books rather than borrow them.

If library use if dwindling why has £5m been spent building a new library in Wycombe?

Probably going to be more like a cybrary.

I suppose if you close down half a dozen libraries around the county, then library borrowing will fall!

More libraries to close soon!

Watch this space.

Libraries can be more efficient if no-one borrows the books.
