Students were left knocked out in surprise when one of the world’s top boxers made a surprise visit to Amersham & Wycombe College.

Kevin Johnson from New Jersey, USA, ranked as one of the top 15 Heavyweights, took time out of his training schedule to come and visit sports students studying at the college’s campus in Flackwell Heath.

Richard Dean, Sports Science college tutor and sports/psychology/mental conditioning coach, has worked with Kevin for the past five years and invited him into college to share some of his life changing experiences with students. Richard will be working with Kevin during the build up to his next big fight.

Kevin started out boxing at the age of 15 after watching it on TV. "I decided right there that’s what I wanted to do," said Kevin.

"It took me seven years of dedicated hard work to get noticed and on the ladder to success. I’ve learnt that no matter who you are and what situation you come from you can still be successful if you put in the work and are prepared to make the sacrifice. You don’t have to follow a basic career, you can be a part of history if you want to - don’t settle for less, become a leader."

Richard said: "Kevin was really keen to be here at college today. He didn’t have to come, but he gave me his word, and here he is. He could have been earning a lot of money doing promotional work, but he wanted to talk to our students because he understands how much of a buzz it can provide. He is also aware that such a visit can ultimately inspire people onto greater things. He sets a great example to others via his actions."

The visit coincided with the launch of Sportivate Boxing which started at the High Wycombe campus earlier this month and lasts for six weeks. Sessions will be delivered by High Wycombe Amateur Boxing Club, linking students to their local club.

Sports students who attend all six sessions and do well with their studies will be entered into a draw for a very special prize, with Kevin to donate two tickets for his upcoming fight to the most deserving student.
