A VERY wet Bank Holiday Monday did not put people off attending the Hazlemere Fete.

Some attractions were held indoors and for the first time the youth centre opened for demonstrations of trampoline, indoor football and Ju Jitsu.

At the Hazlemere Community Centre audiences were entertained with Punch and Judy and music by opera singer David Meacock and an all female vocal harmony group, The Lacettes.

On the main field, audiences were entertained by two bands, Red and Grey and The Virtues and many of the attractions were open.

A member of the fete committee, Bob Digby said, "We actually had to use an overflow car park and I don’t mean for the water and members of staff from the Co-op directing traffic were kept busy, as well as wet and we are very grateful for their help."

The fete was opened with a commemorative ceremony to mark the start of The First World War and the names of 40 Hazlemere residents killed in that conflict were read out.

This was followed by a march past lead by Royal British Legion Standard Bearer Roy Rigg and cadets from The Bucks Army Cadet Force and Royal Marine Cadets.

Mr Rigg, 76, was in the Royal Marines for nine years from 1957. Following this he went to live in France, with his wife, Maureen and two children for five years and tended to the war graves there.

They decided to return to the UK and after a brief spell working for a nursery he joined the Territorial Army for a year.

He then joined the Royal Air Force for 15 years as a physical training instructor. During his service he was posted to RAF Halton as a boxing coach- at the age of 38 he won the RAF featherweight champion, which he also did in his 20s.

The couple, who have been married for 53 years, now live in Hazlemere.

The fete chairman, Ray Cox, said a few words of welcome and Wycombe Wanderers director Alan Cecil was interviewed by Tony McHale.

Mr Cox said "The fete attendance was lower than expected due to the weather but those who came still gave generously to support our four charities and all four will be getting something from the proceeds of our efforts. I also want to congratulate the winners of our raffle, the Children’s Passport Quiz competition and The Fun Dog Show."
