A pupil at Tylers Green Middle School enjoyed a 'mappy Christmas' in Lapland after winning a competition run by Ordnance Survey.

India Gandy, 7, designed a map of Santa's home town to win the contest, open to children under the age of 12.

After the mapping agency picked her map out of hundreds of entries, she was joined by her family to meet Father Christmas himself in Lapland.

Jim Goldsmith, Ordnance Survey cartography manager, says about the decision: "We pride ourselves on our accuracy and attention to detail, which is why it was pleasing to us to see the next generation of map makers share these same high standards and interest in geography.

"There were many fantastically inventive and imaginative maps to choose from, even ones made in the Minecraft game worlds. It was a tough choice for my fellow judges and I, but we were really impressed by India’s correct use of a map legend and north arrow, and her inclusion of the northern lights. That really stood out.

"We could see India went the extra mile, so we thought we should as well, by surprising her and her Tyler Green Middle School classmates with goodies from the Ordnance Survey shop to help continue their interest in maps and geography."

As well as being given a gift by Santa in person, India and her family had a fun packed experience in Lapland, which included what it must feel like to be Santa on Christmas Eve, as they get to sit in a sleigh pulled by Santa’s reindeers.

India said before her trip: "I’m most excited about riding in the husky sledge and meeting Santa."
