'Track should be built' say planning officers

PLANNING officers have advised Wycombe District Council's planning committee to approve controversial plans to move an athletics track to a Hazlemere school.

The council submitted a planning application to build a floodlit eight lane, 400m running track, complete with a pole vault runway, shot putt circle and football pitch, at Sir William Ramsay School in December.

More than 1000 residents have submitted objections against the plans - citing traffic congestion, parking problems, noise and light pollution and a fear the development would destroy the wildlife habitat.

The scheme would replace the Wycombe Sports Centre athletics track, which the council wants to move to make way for a coachway and business park at the Handy Cross.

The “gateway” coachway project was approved last month by councillors subject to planning conditions, including the relocation of the sports centre running track.

Controversy has engulfed the saga after a leaked email from planning committee member Cllr Hugh McCarthy suggested that councillor's should “remember the officer's warning, if it (track) fails at planning then the coachway project is dead, so we need to be careful.”

But the vice chairman of the planning committee, Cllr Simon Bazley, said the committee decides “every application on its merits.”

Cllr McCarthy has been advised by the council solicitor to “play no part” in the decision making process when the planning committee meets to discuss the plans next Wednesday.

Because it won't annoy anyone there, if it goes to SWR, its going to be hell, inconvenient, and the council always go the opposite to want the residents want.
This is just typical of this f*****g council, especially that Clarke crony.

The planning committee cannot make a judgement on the merits of this application because there aren't any. Some of the committee are due to visit the site next Wednesday, as they haven't yet seen it! How can they possibly make an independent judgement after the 'officers' have "advised" they give the go ahead. The whole thing stinks. We all agree, why can't the 'track' be relocated to the new Sports Village in 4 years time? The whole Handy Cross episode for the Gateway is for 6 coach bays! But Clarkey and her cronies saw another opportunity to make some money. So they decided to screw up as many lives as they could in Handy Cross and Hazlemere. Keep up the good work WDC, you wont be there much longer now we have elections coming up. Yipppeeee!

If some of the councillors are coming to look at the site next week for the first time, thats obviously why we have been lucky enough to get Rose Avenue resurfaced! No doubt they will appear after the horrendous school traffic has died down, when you have to take your life into your own hands to cross the road because of the cars parked along the bends by the park and community centre.
I live a fair walking distance from the school and the other week from my garden could hear the Air Cadets (based at SWR) being put through their drill quite clearly - so what it is going to be like sitting in the garden in summer months with the noise from athletics competitions. Although not really directly affected myself, I do feel so sorry for the two separate blocks of elderly housing which close to the proposed site.

We voted for these idiots, but because they've done a coach deal elsewhere, the voices of 1,000 people are being ignored. Does anyone use coaches anyway? Surely not with the forthcoming new fast rail that's going to destroy the Chilterns

I live on the Amersham Road, but they don't think I'll be affected. In fact, the 'proposed' pole vault will be a few metres away from my fence but I'll have a good view because they 'propose' to put a flood light between us and the pole vault! Lesley Clarke said she'd quite like the facility at the bottom of her garden, but when I offered her my house for the full market value (I stand to lose 15% if this goes ahead!) she declined. I can't think why!
