Doctor Phillip Lee calls for new hospital within 20 mins of High Wycombe

DETAILED proposals to build a major new hospital within 20 minutes of High Wycombe have been drawn up by a Berkshire MP.

Doctor Phillip Lee, Conservative MP for Bracknell, has produced a 66-page report which calls for a ‘Royal Thames Valley Hospital’ to be built at Junction 8/9 of the M4 motorway.

This would mean Wycombe patients travelling south along the A404 dual carriageway.

He says the £750 million hospital should provide a full range of acute services, serving south Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and south east Oxfordshire.

It would be financed largely by selling off existing hospital sites such as Wexham Park, along with parts of others such as Wycombe.

This is likely to be hugely controversial, though Wycombe Hospital has already lost key services such as A&E and inpatient maternity wards, meaning many patients have to travel to Aylesbury.

Dr Lee went to school in Marlow and has worked at Stoke Mandeville and Wexham Park hospitals, as well as about 50 GP practices around the Thames Valley.

He said he produced the report because he has a “deep understanding” of healthcare services in the region and “no one else was going to do it”.

The proposal to centralise acute and emergency services in one location would be expected to improve clinical excellence, while also aiming to be the most cost-effective way to tackle the increasing demand for services.

Dr Lee says the new hospital would be in close proximity to Slough, Maidenhead, Bracknell, Windsor, Ascot, High Wycombe, Henley and Wokingham, which are all within about 20 minutes of the proposed site.

Meanwhile, hospital sites such as Wycombe would be further reduced to provide lower level ‘community’ care, with other community facilities such as Marlow Cottage Hospital retained. The proposal would not directly affect Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

Dr Lee adds: “The Royal Thames Valley Hospital would represent a unique opportunity to make 21st century personalised healthcare a reality.

“Replacing out-dated hospitals with a brand new, purpose-built facility, together with the implementation of a new healthcare model to bring care closer to home, would transform the lives of over 650,000 people.”

The Wycombe-based Save Our Hospital Services campaign group has agreed to meet Dr Lee and says his proposal should be opened up to public debate.

See next week's Bucks Free Press for more reaction. See related links to read the full report, which includes maps of the proposed location.

20 minutes by car may be but what about public transport. How easy will that be.

I look forward to seeing the location. I can't imagine it being the easiest place to access with the volume of traffic in that locality (at peak times). Plus a great deal of the A404 is 2 lanes so would require a fair bit of work to make ambulances travel freely & not get caught up in the jams that build up there. Massive project & waste of time.

Give us (i.e. the people of High Wycombe) our own hospital and make improvements/give back services to us.

The plans as I understand it are as follows’:

• Close down Wycombe Hospital ward by ward.
• Transfer to Stoke Mandeville (which is understaffed) and make a super sized County Hospital.
• Sell off the existing hospital site.
• Turn land into a mix of housing and retail.

NHS makes huge savings, Councils rake it in, us the people get shafted and have to find our own way to either Wexham or Stoke Mandeville (which is not pleasant even for car drivers and I would hate to do the journey by public transport)
This is the master plan and we the electorate have no other choice as everyone who has any say/power – follows and behind closed doors supports this plan.
But to our faces they all give the impression that they care and that they are fighting any such plans.
BCC, WDC, NHS and central government – all follow the plan and would lie to our faces to say that they don’t want it. They do.

So, I thought the reason for all the changes - IE wards closing, services moving to Stoke Mandeville, etc are because they are so short of funds and cant maintain the services as they are. Some other hospital authorities have this week, announced receivers are going in due to overspend etc etc (all doom and gloom) so why do they now think they can find the money and resource to not only build this but staff it as well - bearing in mind the recent milllions spent on SMH with extensions etc. I just cant seem to see the logic!!

Of course the building of a new hospital and the closing of the Wycombe site woulkd cause problems for the viability of Stoke Mandeville Hospital. They are part of one big hospital on 3 sites. Taking away the WGH part (and what happens to Amersham?) would mean that SMH would probably be taken over by Oxford.
That would mean that Buckinghamshire hospitals would be controlled by other counties.
No localism here then!
It would have been better to build a new hospital between Wycombe and Aylesbury but thats not going to happen now.
I doubt if this has much chance of coming of happening.

I know of ban ideal site for hospital at Handy Cross which would be next to the planned bus interchange --- its the site that WDC are planning for Sports Centre
WDC could then put Sports Centre in the town

So why should the sports centre be in the town and the hospital which really should be accessible and easy to get to be at the top of a big hill?
People who use sports centres tend to be fit... people who use hospitals tend not to be..
Duh!!!

Ridiculous. Just redevelop the Wycombe general site by moving Staples to a more retail friendly location to give it the room it needs. Would be substantially cheaper and better located.

why have they spent so much money in wycombe hospital, making new toilets etc. for visitors and outpatients etc.?
I think, myself, that people would rather go to the loo in buckets, if it meant they only had to travel a small way for treatment etc!!

Moving or building a Hospital to Maidenhead is fine for me and very much better option the Stoke but I live in Marlow so thats not hard decision for me to make. But as for public transport, its total rubbish at least with its current location there are buses and to get from Wycombe to the M4 / A404 junction is currently is about as easy as it is for Marlow People to get to Aylesbury.

The Sports center center or as should be termed - new office and hotel complex site is a feasible option if a new Hospital was to be planed (at least there are busses to the site from all directions) but it wont happen - to many different and conflicting interests added to a complete lack of joined up thinking by those in office.
