Religious leaders brought out the bunting for a world-record attempt at Bucks New University Community leaders from faiths across High Wycombe united at BNU to support its multi-faith chaplaincy in contributing to a charity effort to create the world’s longest continuous string of bunting.

The event at the Queen Alexandra Road site was part of Inter Faith Week 2014 and supported Noah’s Ark Children Hospice, based in Hertfordshire, in its world-record attempt.

The aim was to create ten miles of bunting, comprising 60,000 flags, and the volunteers at BNU added 250 metres in five hours by cutting paper triangles from different materials and sewing themtogether.

Karen Johnstone, coordinating chaplain for the Multi-faith Chaplaincy, said the initiative was organised by the Jewish Christian Muslim Group which regularly meets at the University.

She said: "The religious leaders in the community were joined by Bucks students and staff and we did our best to make a major contribution to the world-record effort. It is still ongoing but let’s hope it succeeds!"

The event was attended by Mrs Johnstone, and Rev Hugh Ellis, Vicar of All Saints Church in High Wycombe; Imam Sultan of Totteridge Road Mosque; Rabbi Rachel Benjamin of South Bucks Jewish Community; Anne Bowker, Chair of Wycombe Sharing of Faiths; Councillor Chauhdry Shafique MBE, Chairman of the Council For Christian Muslim Relations; and Rev Mark Macaulay, of Oakridge Baptist Church, in Oakridge Road, High Wycombe.

It coincided with Mitzvah Day, the Jewish-led global annual day of social action, and was included as part of Activities Week at Bucks New University, where students are encouraged to try new things and increase their employability.
