Amost a third of school lollipop patrollers in Bucks have served the community for over ten years and councillors are looking for more people to put their hands up to help.

Come rain or shine lollipop patrollers make sure they are available to help guide children and their parents across busy roads and Bucks County Council want this to continue.

BCC deputy cabinet member for transport, Mark Shaw, would like more people to step forward and take the lollipop – and once they do he is sure they will stick around.

Seven patrollers across the county have been lining the streets for more than 20 years, including West Wycombe favourite Christine Walker, who will have clocked up 37 years come February.

He said: “They all play a fantastic part in our children's safety. But for everyone, much as they love the job, there comes a time when they want to stand down.

“And I'm looking to round up nine new patrollers to keep our children safe crossing our busy roads. They're wanted... but for no longer than an hour or so a day.”

As part of a campaign from Cllr Shaw to see more wanted people step forward he will be seen as the patrol ‘sheriff’.

'Sheriff' Mark will be visiting school crossing patrols which are in need of more volunteers in High Wycombe, Beaconsfield, Aylesbury and Buckingham to support a recruitment campaign that launches tomorrow (Monday, December 1).

And he has been going around the county researching danger spots.

In Beaconsfield, one school has three lollipop patrollers to help guide students to their destination with residents Jenny Flynn, Debbie Marsden and Belinda Avery taking shifts looking after the High March School crossing.

Mrs Marsden said: “'This is more than enough reward for the job.

“But hopefully we are making a difference as well - helping to make them safer and also happier to walk to school.”
