Family and friends of a man who died in police custody held a vigil to mark his birthday at the weekend.

Justice4Paps held the vigil in honour of Habib ‘Paps’ Ullah, who died after suffering a cardiac arrest when he was restrained by police officers during a stop and search.

Four years ago, an inquest began into the 39-year-old’s death. Yet it had to be abandoned when it was revealed that police officers had been advised to alter parts of their statements by a solicitor.

Although the case was referred to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) at the time, earlier this year the decision was taken not to prosecute the officers involved.

More than 30 people gathered outside High Wycombe Police Station on Saturday evening. Habib’s family spoke of how difficult this year has been for them following the CPS’ decision.

At the end of the vigil, Habib’s children presented a card to a police officer in the station reception on what would have been his 46th birthday.

A second inquest into Habib’s death is due to be heard in February.

The candlelit vigil was held from 5pm to 7.30pm outside the Queen Victoria Road police station.
