Just four months until the General Election and Wycombe’s MP is gearing up for a fight – although not in the way you might expect.

Not only focused on defending his Conservative seat, Steve Baker used his day off to learn some actual self defence moves from trainers at the Combat Academy.

Mr Baker said he is a firm believer in self defence and the day spent at the Combat Academy was “in the interest of research”.

The day began with some fitness training and then the class moved onto how to guard and protect oneself.

The video clips, which were filmed at the end of the session, show Mr Baker going head-to-head with chief instructor at the academy, Reece Coker - a cage fighter.

Mr Baker said: “I put him in a headlock and he completely lifted me off the ground.

“Although my pride has been dented I’m not ashamed that Reece was able to deal with me.”

Speaking on why he went to the academy, Mr Baker said: “It was in the interest of research because they are aiming to turn people’s lives around through the medium of self defence.

“They are an incredible group giving people self esteem and purpose. This self defence training can answer [a lot of questions].”

He added: “I stand very firmly against aggression but I do believe in self defence when people attack you. It’s absolutely legitimate for us to defend ourselves within reason.”

Mr Baker said that, had he not already committed to going to the Combat Academy on Sunday, he would have endeavoured to attend the parade through High Wycombe, which was held in celebration of the prophet Muhammed’s birthday and attracted hundreds to the town centre.
