Commuters are advised to check before they travel tomorrow morning after confirmed reports the M40 will not reopen until 6am following a serious accident tonight.

Traffic England has confirmed the motorway will remain shut overnight after a a car overturned and caught fire around 7.20pm between junction 3 for Loudwater and junction 4 for Handy Cross.

Bucks Fire and Rescue and Thames Valley Police rushed to the scene, which happened on the northbound carriageway and the road was closed.

The London bound carriageway was also closed soon afterwards.

As yet, there are no confirmed reports of injuries sustained in the crash, though onlookers on Twitter have described the incident as “horrific”.

Traffic alerts report that a car crossed through the central reservation from the southbound side to the northbound side, overturned and caught fire.

Thames Valley Police are handling the ongoing incident, but have not yet confirmed the latest on the vehicles involved.

Highways Agency has placed signed diversions across the area, and have issued the following advice:

  • Traffic is diverted Southbound via the A404 and A40, following the soild triangle.
  • Traffic is diverted northbound, via the A355, A40 and A404, following the hollow square.
  • Traffic approaching on the M25 clockwise wishing to travel to Oxford and the West Midlands is advised to exit the M25 at J15 and use the M4 westbound and A404(M) northbound to join the M40 northbound at J4.
  • Traffic approaching on the M6 and M42 from the North West and West Midlands wishing to travel to London is advised to use the M6 and M1.
