VIDEO: TV crew film at Wycombe Mayor Making
CHEERS and boos were heard across Frogmoor today as the annual Mayor Making ceremony took place, which was also filmed by an ITV show.
Ade Edmondson was there filming Ade in Britain with his film crew, which travels across Britain meeting traditional food producers and people continuing ancient customs.
The Mayor Making ceremony, which was first introduced in the 17th century to root out those dining at taxpayers’ expense, weighs councillors and public officials each year.
The town crier shouts either “no more” if their weight has not increased since last year or “some more” if it has.
Incoming Mayor Chauhdry Shafique was greeted with cheers as “no more” was called out, as did new deputy Sebert Graham and outgoing mayor Chaudhary Ditta.
Outgoing mayoress, Jane White, however had “some more” as did outgoing deputy mayor, Trevor Snaith and Wycombe MP Steve Baker.
Cllr Shafique said: “I am relieved. It is not something I had planned for- it just worked out that way.”
He said of the ceremony: “Talking to people going around today they really enjoy the Mayor Making ceremony.”
Cllr Graham said he was pleased he had put on no more as he had not been following any special exercises.
He said: “I think today has been the best day. The weather has been kind to us. The crowd is getting bigger and bigger each year. It is the Mayor’s day and the people’s day.”
Cllr Ditta said he was expecting to put weight on.
He said: “I am feeling so great and happy. I got up from the scales hearing “no more”.
“That is a great relief. I don’t know how I did it.”
