VIDEO: TV crew film at Wycombe Mayor Making

CHEERS and boos were heard across Frogmoor today as the annual Mayor Making ceremony took place, which was also filmed by an ITV show.

Ade Edmondson was there filming Ade in Britain with his film crew, which travels across Britain meeting traditional food producers and people continuing ancient customs.

The Mayor Making ceremony, which was first introduced in the 17th century to root out those dining at taxpayers’ expense, weighs councillors and public officials each year.

The town crier shouts either “no more” if their weight has not increased since last year or “some more” if it has.

Incoming Mayor Chauhdry Shafique was greeted with cheers as “no more” was called out, as did new deputy Sebert Graham and outgoing mayor Chaudhary Ditta.

Outgoing mayoress, Jane White, however had “some more” as did outgoing deputy mayor, Trevor Snaith and Wycombe MP Steve Baker.

Cllr Shafique said: “I am relieved. It is not something I had planned for- it just worked out that way.”

He said of the ceremony: “Talking to people going around today they really enjoy the Mayor Making ceremony.”

Cllr Graham said he was pleased he had put on no more as he had not been following any special exercises.

He said: “I think today has been the best day. The weather has been kind to us. The crowd is getting bigger and bigger each year. It is the Mayor’s day and the people’s day.”

Cllr Ditta said he was expecting to put weight on.

He said: “I am feeling so great and happy. I got up from the scales hearing “no more”.

“That is a great relief. I don’t know how I did it.”

Wonderful to see Morris Dancers and re-enactors and musicians in Wycombe Town centre. Really felt like a historic market town today, well done to all those involved.

I have lived here all my life however this is only the second time I've see this. It really bought the town to life again, especially the 17th century re-enacters and the morris men.
It sounds a bit petty but the free parking really helped the day - initially we were only going to one shop but ended up spending several hours including having a cup of tea, watching the ceremony and visiting the rye... rather than rusing back to the car.

*rushing back to the car*
(The car was not up for a joke!)

What is going on, this annual Mayor Making ceremony, is always done outside the guild hall and the Falcon, now is it because the film crew was there that it was moved from from the traditional place, if so was the film director dictating where to do it, as this years ceremony was not in its tradition

Yesi it was definitely on Frogmoor last year, a good venue for it, plenty of space for spectators.

Sounds marvellous. Well done all those that organised it. How great to hear good news! I had to miss it because I was involved with Armed Forces parade, in front of the Queen, at Windsor but I will certainly go to the weigh-in when it is held in 2013.

Were the film crew there to film the TRUTH?
Frogmore has become Ghost Town Wycombe, I doubt if they will film all the empty businesses, by all means film our town but don't portray it as something it isn't. Closing off the streets and re-routing the buses was O.T.T.
They say the camera doesn't lie, filming a normal day without the hype could show Wycombe as it really is DOUR.

Aylesbury and Downley buses routes 300 and 31 still use Frogmore except for the whole of Saturday for this event.
As for the locals being excited about it, I think that exaggerates the truth, I have yet to meet anyone who has any interest in the weighing in and out, perhaps those who were asked were those taking part.
Pound shops, Charity Shops, Banks, Building Societies, Estate Agents and numerous empty premises does not make a town centre and Eden is still as uninviting as ever.

Although I enjoyed the day I think calling it a 'Medieval fayre' was a bit far fetched. It was also a bit strange to see an Italian market next to a traditional English event.

Apparently the 'tradition' was reintroduced during I think the late 19th century. Nonetheless, when I saw it some years ago in pouring rain people of different ethnicities were walking slowly and seriously, some with umbrellas, to be weighed and I thought it was somehow a moving scene linking us, whoever we were, with the history of the town in previous centuries.

Actually there were lots of Italian prisoners of war here during 1939-45 - so maybe it's a bit more traditional than it looks at first sight.

I still say that the tradition of the weighing in just be carried out at the guild hall, this it part of the guild hall ceromonies, where traditional acient buildings are, not frogmoor, whicjh the council have messed up, we need a nice fountain there, just like Munich city,,, or the council could dig a big hole there and sit in it thereselves, so people can throw rotten fruit and veg at them

The citizens and denizens of Wycombe Town hereby to respectively request that you together with your gratuitous insults (inaccurate btw ) do not visit yourself (including your kith and kin) on the ancient Town of High Wycombe and its folk.
.
You obviously hate the place - so what's the point of all the abuse ?
.
Unless you get some perverse kind of kick out of it. If that is so , then we all politely advise you to seek psychiatric help of some kind. Good Luck with that. But , in the meantime , do try to be a bit positive about Life. Please. For everybody's sake.
