FANS of a flutter will be able to place their bets from today as Marlow’s second bookmakers opens its doors amid controversy at its arrival.

Residents and businesses reacted angrily when William Hill announced it was seeking permission to move to West Street into one half of the old Blockbusters store.

It comes after unsuccessful attempts by residents to prevent Domino's Pizza from opening a takeaway next door in the other section of the former video shop.

The Marlow Society objected to the move from the national food chain, saying it would detract from the 'heritage' of the shopping street.

Neighbours raised concerns about having another betting shop in town alongside Ladbrokes on Spittal Street, with one calling the move "a nail in the coffin" for Marlow.

And businesses argued the premises should remain as a retail premises in an area intended mainly for shopping.

Despite a raft of complaints, WDC granted permission for the store, with the doors set to open for business today according to the bookmaker.
