FRIENDS of a Marlow teenager who tragically died on holiday earlier this year say they have been ‘overwhelmed’ with support after they planned to hold a football tournament in his memory.

James Fifield, 18, from Marlow, died in Zante, Greece, on Saturday, July 5, after spending a week on the island celebrating the end of his A-Level studies, with seven friends from the Wye Valley School.

Since his death, the seven friends have kept a strong relationship with James’ family and they all meet together for a few hours at least once a week.

The seven boys also go to the teenager’s graveside every week.

One of the boys, Avion Chandiram, told the Bucks Free Press they have found it difficult since his death but have been helped by the support of others.

He said: "I think we have all found it really tough since James’ death, I know personally I have struggled at times.

"We have all been overwhelmed by the help of others and how many people have shown us their support."

This Sunday the boys will be hosting a football tournament in Flackwell Heath, in the memory of their close friend.

Four teams including his friends, former football teammates and other peers will take to the pitch at the weekend.

As well as the sporting competition there will also be a number of stalls and refreshments on offer, with more than 100 people already signed up to join in on the day.

Mr Chandiram said: "We decided to hold the football match because James loved his football.

"There will be a lot of people there on the day that knew James and in a way it is just as much about remembering him as it is raising money for his family.

"Many people were unable to go to his funeral and hopefully they will be coming on Sunday."

The memorial tournament will be held at Flackwell Heath Football Club, Wilks Park, in Heath End Road, where James used to play.

The gates will open at 11am with the first game expected to kick-off at 12pm.
