GREEN-FINGERED pupils at a Marlow school will proudly show off the fruits of their labours this week in a gardening project organised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

St Peter’s Catholic Primary School in Marlow will throw open its doors for parents, friends and neighbours to see what’s been going on in the garden for the ‘Get Your Grown Ups Growing’ project.

Pupils will encourage grown up visitors to get their hands dirty and help out with a range of gardening activities during the ‘Ground Force’ event, while showing off vegetables already harvested.

Amanda McCluskey, Head Teacher, said: "All of the children from Reception to Year six have enthusiastically participated in planting and harvesting vegetables and the garden has provided a fantastic resource for many areas of the curriculum.

"The 'Get Your Grown Ups Growing' event will help us develop our great garden and it's use even further."

The national day has been organised by the RHS as a way of encouraging parents, grandparents and other grown-ups to help their child’s school to get gardening.

Activities at the Prospect Road School open day will include building raised beds, digging, bulb planting, tidying and pruning, painting, And garden craft activities.

There will also be a cake sale to raise funds for the school.

Almost 19,000 green-fingered schools signed up for the nationwide initiative, which launched in September 2007.

Sarah Cathcart, Head of Education at the RHS, said: “We think it is important that every child has access to a garden area and having one at school is a great way to get them to learn about their environment, enjoying fresh air and understanding where their food comes from.

“We hope that grown-ups attending the events across the country will be inspired to stay involved with their local school’s garden and support its development in the longer term. It’s a great way to bring the community together.”

The school will be open for the event between 11am and 3pm this Saturday, November 15.
