EXCITED pupils got a chance to feel - and in one case taste - an Olympic gold medal as rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave passed on nuggets of wisdom at a Marlow school’s careers day.

Frieth School welcomed the five-time Olympic gold medallist as their star speaker during a day of workshops aimed at introducing the primary-aged pupils to the world of work.

And the youngsters got a chance to pass round one of his prized golds as he talked them through his years of hard work on the way to world domination.

Headteacher Jo Reid said: "He was brilliant. Some of children asked him very similar questions but he managed to answer each time in a different way.

"He brought in one of his medals, which was brilliant, and it was being passed round as he spoke.

"The very fact of introducing Sir Steve Redgrave to your children was very, very inspirational."

During the careers day, pupils got the chance to quiz around 20 different professionals, including a London Zoo snake handler, pharmacist and BA pilot Nicola Brown, the chair of governors at the school.

And Mrs Reid said the starry-eyed children left with a much greater understanding of the importance of finding the right career after what resembled like a full-blown secondary school careers fair.

She said: "It was fantastic, very positive and inspiring and to get the children to think about what they might want to do when they’re older.

"The message was you’ve got to enjoy what you do and get inspired by it and then it doesn’t feel like work.

"The whole idea was to say it’s not just about what your parents do, there’s a whole world of things out there."
