GREEN-FINGERED volunteers lugged over 30 sacks of waste to the tip after planting, weeding, shifting, pruning and digging at a Marlow school over the weekend.

Around 40 helpers turned up for St Peter’s Catholic Primary School’s 'Ground Force' day on Saturday, with a little help from town mayor Suzanne Brown.

And the hardy gardeners - little and large - put their back into the work to get the school’s gardens ready for planting produce in the spring.

Parent helper Sian Shanahan said: "It was a wonderful day, we had around 40 adult helpers as well as children. They had their own activities but a lot of them wanted to get their hands dirty and were very helpful.

"We were pleasantly surprised and there were more than double the number we thought we’d have."

The national ‘Get your grown-ups growing’ initiative has been organised by the Royal Horticultural Society as a way of encouraging parents, grandparents and other grown-ups to help their child’s school to get gardening.
