Village cricketers left a bat at the entrance of their clubhouse during their end of season dinner last week in tribute to "cricketing brother" Phillip Hughes, who died last week.

Frieth Cricket Club remembered the 25-year-old Australian batsman - killed after being struck by a ball during a match in Sydney - with a moment of reflection as they brought the curtain down on another year.

The bat was left as part of the "put out your bats" tribute campaign on social media, while players celebrated their own successes throughout the year.

And while the main aim of the dinner was to celebrate the season’s triumphs, players were also able to continue fundraising for the club’s new pavilion.

Ben Smiley , club chairman, said: "It was incredibly sad to learn of Phillip Hughes’ death last week, but we were proud to be able to join the global cricketing community in demonstrating our support.

"As a celebration of our cricketing year and our player’s achievements, the End of Season Dinner is a popular date for both players and supporters of the Club, and it was only proper to acknowledge the recent tragedy in Australia."
