Defiant councillors say they will not consider raising their share of the council tax to pay for next year’s Christmas lights.

A shortfall of £5000 needs to be met after a gaping hole in Marlow Town Council’s annual budget was left when Wycombe District Council’s contribution ended this year.

Councillors say they do not want to compromise on the quality of the display, and instead are continuing their hunt for sponsors for next year’s illuminations.

Cllr Jocelyn Towns said: "It is really important for us that we are able to provide the same as last year.

"There will be no drop in quality this year, but we accept that we need more sponsorship do that that. We have had fantastic feedback from this year and we must raise more to maintain that standard."

She added that support is already flooding in towards the appeal, with new businesses coming on board and a successful street collection.

Marlow Chamber of Trade and Commerce has also pledged its support.

The total cost of the festive display is £17,000 to 20,000, with £12,000 earmarked from next year’s Marlow town budget.

But members say they do not want to up the council tax precept to meet the extra £5000.

Resources chairman Cllr Bob Johnson said it "would not be a responsible use of taxpayers money".

He said: "It should be noted that where we believe there is a tangible benefit for all residents we would consider increasing the precept, but until that time will maintain the zero increase."

The last time the precept was raised to pay for extra services was the funding of a dedicated PCSO for Marlow.
