A grammar school in Marlow has been chosen to help train the next generation of teachers after being named as a specialist teaching centre for the profession.

Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School is one of 61 selected this month to become a ‘National Teaching School’ to guide newly trained teachers through the early stages of their career.

Staff will now take a leading role in recruiting and training new teachers, identifying leadership potential and providing support for other schools.

It is another feather in the cap for the academy after head Peter Holding was last year chosen for a leadership role helping other schools facing challenges.

He said: "We are absolutely delighted to be designated as a Teaching School. "This is a great recognition of our commitment to working alongside our local school partners, and builds upon the work we have already been doing in Marlow and the local community."

Dr Holding said the move forms part of governors’ strategy to strengthen partnerships with other schools in the area.

Introduced in 2011, Teaching Schools are all rated as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted and work with partner schools with training and opportunities for teachers at all stages of their career.

Borlase will also have a role ensuring the most talented staff are spotted and supported to become successful headteachers.

Last year, Dr Holding took up a role as a National Leader of Education to provide help and advice to schools in difficult circumstances.

He has been at the helm of the West Street school since 1998.
