Members of a Marlow-based band will honour the memory of one of their founding members next week as they raise money for a charity that helped him.

The BBO Big Band, which rehearses at Marlow’s Royal British Legion Club, is holding a concert there next Thursday to raise money for Blind Veterans UK.

The show will honour the memory of trombone player Peter Mayhew, who played with the band since its formation in 1986 and passed away in November aged 86 after suffering from bone cancer.

Band members wanted to raise money for the cause after it helped former serviceman Mr Mayhew when his sight deteriorated in his later years.

Hilary Spiers, who plays in the band, said: “As a founder member of the BBO Big Band, Peter played a massive part in raising over £345,000 for charity.

“He spoke so highly of Blind Veterans UK so we wanted the money raised from this concert to support them.

“As a musician, losing his sight was particularly difficult for Peter and the charity provided him with vital support.”

BBO is planning an evening of jazz, swing and big band music featuring vocalists Tricia Bassett and Steve Bailey.

The Blind Veterans charity provides blind and vision impaired ex-service men and women with lifelong support including welfare support, rehabilitation, training, residential and respite care.

The concert will be held on Thursday, February 26 at 8.15pm at club on Station Approach, Marlow. Tickets cost £6 on the door
