A doctor who gave up her time to help screen young people against possible heart problems said the weekend was a great success.

Family GP Shona Lockie saw 164 teenagers and young people on Saturday and Sunday to prevent future tragedies like the sudden death of the 17-year-old Great Marlow School pupil Nathan Foley in 2013.

The doctor, based at Marlow Surgery, undertook the screenings with help from charity Cardiac Risk in the Young, which works to prevent deaths from previously undiagnosed conditions.

Dr Lockie said four of the 164 people tested have been referred to cardiologists for further checks.

She said: “the CRY heart screening event was a great success this weekend.

“They are a very professional organisation and I know those that had the screening done were very grateful. I had many people thanking me for organising it.”

Dr Lockie said she wanted to raise awareness of the problem, with CRY estimating at least 12 young people die suddenly every week in the UK from undiagnosed heart conditions.

The Marlow community was rocked by Nathan’s death, after he collapsed while playing football with friends in 2013.
