One of Marlow’s biggest property owners Shanly Group has hit back at criticisms over rental rates in the town.

Shanly and its commercial arm Sorbon Estates - founded by multi-millionaire Marlow businessman Michael Shanly - has defended itself over the future of independent stores after two long-standing family businesses say they were priced out of their premises.

Residents have also questioned whether high market rents will cause Marlow's unique High Street to look the same as any other.

The landlord says over half of its portfolio is made up of independent shops.

And it has defended its rental rates, saying Marlow is a "special place" and that the multi-million pound firm is "thoroughly committed" to a healthy retail mix in town.

Shanly Group Operations Director Tamra Booth said: "The Sorbon Estates team is always very disappointed to see independent stores leave the High Street in Marlow, particularly if it is one of our valued tenants.

"We care deeply about the town, and particularly about the retention of its character.

"We have worked with our tenant, Turner Sports, to ensure that they have been able to afford their final few months in the store and are very sorry to lose them as a tenant.

"There are many landlords in the High Street and we therefore cannot express their views, however, we are very proud to say that more than half of our retail portfolio in Marlow is made up of independent stores.

"We take time to assess business plans and talk to prospective tenants to ensure they can bring vitality to the town.

"It is true that Marlow rents have been increasing incrementally over recent years due to the town’s popularity and success, but they are always sensitive to and in-line with both the market in Marlow as well as the wider area.

"As a commercial business, we know there needs to be the right mix of shops in Marlow if it is to continue to thrive. Marlow is a special place and must stay that way.

"We remain thoroughly committed to the town and where possible we work in the background to facilitate improvements and lend support wherever we can."

This year, Shanly Group launched a low cost pop-up shop scheme on Spittal Street to encourage first-time independent traders.

And it is working with the council on an upgrade project for Spittal Street to improve lighting, paving and drainage.
