Maximum speeds of up to 90mph is one of the radical proposals put forward by a Marlow-based pressure group to ease problems on the nation’s roads.

NewDeal4Drivers has launched a new initiative to lobby authorities to combine technology innovation with new motoring rules.

Immediate penalties are suggested and ‘Smart’ Motorways are on the top of priorities for the organisation, said spokesman Bill Fenton.

The proposal consists of new variable speed limits, which are not limited to slower than 70mph. The solution that NewDeal4Drivers offers is to allow the motorways to have maximum speeds of up to 90mph.

Under its plans, the use of automatic number plate recognition systems would see motorists have their car put into detention for a period of time in certain areas to avoid high fines.

Mr Fenton said: "At the moment, existing laws are being widely ignored by the vast majority of drivers.

"Indeed, Government knowingly turns a blind eye to many existing breaches of motoring law, a situation which does little but exacerbate the problem.

"The current political parties, knowing there will be a vocal back lash from a minority of drivers over changes to the law, have all shied away from revising current motoring laws that have little or no relevance to current technology, modern cars and the evolving needs of everyday motorists.

"We call for a fundamental review of all motoring laws to make them more relevant to the 21st century, using technology to automate the way laws are enforced, with more relevant penalties for offenders."

The pressure group also thought about how technology can help to reduce the huge amount of damage that over-weight lorries cause to the roads.

A procedure to weigh all incoming goods vehicles will be held to ensure that they meet the UK’s weight requirements.

NewDeal4Drivers also suggests ways for government to implement some of their proposed changes, should the lawmakers decide to adopt any of its ideas.

Setting up a small central government team responsible for the creation of major park-and-ride schemes fed from Motorways  is one of the group's ideas of how to ease the pressure on towns and cities.

None of the maistream political parties has yet adopted the policies outlined in the manifesto.
