This summer marks a landmark occasion for one of Marlow’s best loved and most colourful traditions, with organisers calling for entrants to make it the best year yet.

Sunday, June 14 sees the 15th annual Dragon Boat Festival, which takes over the second day of Marlow’s Town Regatta weekend.

The jovial occasion features wacky fancy dress teams battling it out to be crowned Dragon Boat champion along the Thames stretch opposite Higginson Park.

And organisers Dragons Alive are looking for fresh competition to challenge reigning winners Wokingham Dragons who triumphed last year.

Owner Sarah Doyle said: "Everyone is encouraged to participate whether you’re a seasoned paddler or a complete beginner.

This is very much a relaxed day out, with a garden party feeling.

"Participants and spectators are not only able to enjoy the dragon boat racing and the canoeing with the fantastic views offered by the river Thames, but also a whole entertainment programme in the park."

The Dragon Boat Festival has occupied the second day of the Town Regatta calendar since the move of the original regatta to Dorney Lake in 2000.

The festival is split up into four categories, including ladies and junior contests.

All teams will race against each other in the heats before separating out into their own finals.

The competition has drawn some big names, with former Olympic rower Lady Ann Redgrave bringing some pedigree to proceedings with her team Marlow Roses.

But even the glittering legacy of the wife of a five-time Olympic gold medal winner could not stop her squad slipping to defeat in last year’s contest.

And it remains to be confirmed whether veteran team the Ageing Dads will pick up their oars for a record 15th consecutive appearance.
