Black not red and blue recycling bins for Marlow

RED and blue recycling bins will not be coming to Marlow as part of a trial after town councillors argued the colours were not “appropriate for the town”.

Instead, black bins, which are designed to be the permanent model should the scheme prove successful, will take their place.

Ten temporary containers, which will collect newspapers, magazines, cans and plastic bottles, will be placed throughout the town from September 7 for a three month trial.

The bright colours were designed to “attract attention and encourage people to use them” said Wycombe District Council (WDC), which is responsible for recycling.

However, the idea was unpopular among Marlovians who thought it would be out of keeping with the street scene.

Marlow Town councillor Richard Scott, who also represents the town on WDC and Buckinghamshire County Council, has been in discussions with officers about the bins.

He said: “We have suggested that red and blue is not appropriate for the town. Many of the locations for the bins we were opposed to but I think we have succeeded in relocating a lot of them from the High Street.”

However, he said he backed the idea to encourage recycling.

“I support that and I think other people in Marlow do as well. We have to do our fair share of recycling as well as everyone else.”

Black bins have already been introduced in High Wycombe town centre after a seven month trial of the blue and red models.

WDC said 1.86 tonnes of paper and 132 kilograms of cans and plastic were collected from the bins during the trial.

Each bin bag holds 70 litres and is emptied two or three times a day.

Marlow Chamber of Trade vice-president Annie Mulady said: “ I'm glad WDC has listened to the feedback on the colour and location of the recycling bins.

“I would be happier if they relocated some of these nearer to react ration grounds where people are more likely to be using materials which are recyclable.”

The ten bins will be located in the following spots:

- By the sub-station next to the toilets

- outside the toilets - Higginson park side.

- near the main gate to Higginson park

- opposite the Memorial garden

- outside Mallink, High Street

- outside Hewitts, High Street

- seating area at Anglers Court

- West Street car park by ticket machine

- Dean Street car park by ticket machine

- near the railway station

Why is the colour of the bins so important? When they go up in flames they all look the same!

Surprised they don't all bear a gold Marlow crest.

What's the chances these are the (much loved by Ivor) multicoloured bins previously to be seen in HW. Having served their "catch your attention get you used to the idea" purpose there, they are re-deployed to the next place on the list.
.
Then, once the trial period is over and the good burghers are into the swing of on street recycling opportunities, get replaced by more subtle and appropriate black numbers. Like the ones in HW.
.
That's the way to roll-out on street recycling bins. All the bleating about wastefulness seems a bit hollow now.

I suggest Wycombe to become Unitary Authority.

I want my council tax spent in the town I live in.

Marlow can remain Bucks and residents there can do what they like. The town is only one street anyway why have ten bins? It only complicates situation when collection is made. I am thinking of traffic.

As for Ivor we can sell him on Ebay? money raised could help pay for Holywell Mead pool. HAHAHAHA

You may be correct , gg
.
However Marlow councillors and their kith seem to care more about their town than the present collection of Wycombe councillors seem to care about Wycombe. Did you know one of 'our' councillors actually lives in Reading ?
.
WDC (with the help of Marlow councillors it seems) appear nonetheless to be hell-bent on destroying any history or heritage of this ancient Town of Wycombe - town with a far more complex , intersting and older history than Marlow.
.
Yes , gg, you've talked me into it - Cut Marlow loose (with its Slough postcode). They are far too good for the likes of us , are they not ?
.
Let Wycombe flourish in sole command of its own destiny.
You may find that OllieNewbury agrees with this (!!!!)
.
