Carols, music and lights usher in Marlow's Christmas

CAROLS and music ushered in Marlow’s Christmas tonight as the festive period was launched with the tree lights switch on.

Children from Holy Trinity School and Sir William Borlase’s School choir provided some musical entertainment before the traditional yuletide tree began to sparkle.

Reverend Nick Maloney spoke about the meaning of Christmas before Mayor Neil Marshall flicked the switch - which only lit two thirds of the illuminations to begin with.

After a brief technical glitch, electricity kicked in to the upper part of the decorative coloured bulbs and the Causeway, near the bridge came to life with light.

Cllr Marshall said: “Just a small technical glitch. This is the start of Christmas in the town for me and I think it’s a good family occasion.

“I think it’s been a difficult year for people but I’m sure they’re looking forward to spending time together with family for Christmas.”

Late night shopping also took place this evening with a host of stalls run by retailers, charities and community organisations selling various goods.

It is organised by Marlow Chamber of Trade.

Chamber president Andy McCready said: “I’d like to thank everyone who has turned up, it’s a good turnout and I know all the retailers appreciate it.

“I want to thank all the businesses and people who have helped put on what is a great event.”
