Sainsbury's 'second best' say Marlow Waitrose shoppers

WAITROSE shoppers have given a resounding thumbs down to the new Sainsbury's store set to replace it in Marlow.

Plans for supermarket giant Sainsbury's to build a bigger shop at the West Street site were approved last week by Wycombe District Council subject to conditions being met.

The decision appears to bring an end to the long running saga which began when Sainsbury's acquired the head lease in 2007.

Waitrose shoppers told the Free Press on Friday they will go to the company's own new store – to be built at the vacant Chapel House offices in Liston Road – or another of the company's stores in nearby towns such as Henley when the current shop closes.

Many said they felt a loyalty towards the company, part of the John Lewis brand, which has been in the town for 37 years.

Brian Wright, retired, 75, of Victoria Road, Marlow, said he would shop “wherever Waitrose go” and said he would not shop at Sainsbury's “out of principle”.

Mr Wright said: “Waitrose have been very good to us in the past.

"When the national figures and ratings come out Waitrose always comes out on top, why do we want second best?”

He added: “Not only are Sainsbury's going to have one shop they're going to have two which I think is wrong.”

Sainsbury's confirmed last week it will keep its 'local' store on the High Street – even after the West Street redevelopment has happened.

Beth Davies, a housewife, of Chinnor Hill, Chinnor, said: “I will probably still go to Waitrose. I might go to the Waitrose in Thame. Sainsbury's is okay but maybe not quite as nice as Waitrose.”

Octogenarian Edmund Stuck, retired, of Lock Road, Marlow, said he had never been to Sainsbury's but felt a strong loyalty towards Waitrose.

He said: “We'll go down the road to the new one, or if not to the Waitrose in Beaconsfield.”

Andrew Spratley, 42, a sales director, of Glade Road, said: “I won't shop at Sainsbury's, they don't have the quality. I'm a loyal Waitrose customer, it's a real shame.”

He said he will probably shop at the Henley or Windsor branch of Waitrose.

Sandy Gifford, 61, a company director, of Quarry Wood Road, Marlow, said: “I will go to the new Waitrose or the one in Maidenhead. A lot of it is to do with the staff there, who are so terrific.”

Mrs Gifford said she sometimes shops in Sainsbury's but prefers Waitrose. “It's not so much the quality but I think the range of items is not as good,” she said.

However, Rebecca Gawith, 60, of Mundaydean Lane, said she often could not get items from Waitrose that she needs and has to go to Marks & Spencer or Sainsbury's Local anyway.

Mrs Gawith, who used to run Book Ends in Marlow, said: “I shall shop at Sainsbury's when it's a Sainsbury's.

“It's probable that I wouldn't shop here all the time if it was an Asda, but I might if it was a Tesco and I shall when it's a Sainsbury's."

Loudwater Tesco is her likely destination for a big shop while the Sainsbury's store is under construction, she added.

Will you go to the new Sainsbury's when it is built? Do you feel a loyalty to the supermarket chain you go to?

And what is wrong with Asda Mrs Gawith???????

I bet people said the same about your Book end Shop, no wonder you haven't got it anymore.

Some of us can't afford to shop in Waitrose anyway. Bring on Sainsbury's!!

Oh I say, one finds Sainsbury's so frightfully common...

Seriously though, am I abnormal for not ever developing a loyalty to any of the big stores? I just go to whatever store is most convenient. They mostly sell the same stuff, some items cheaper than others, some more expensive than others.

I hardly use Waitrose in Marlow. They rarely have what I want, and when they do it takes a long time to get through the tills. I use the branch in Henley. It's only 15 mins away, has a far greater range of goods (obviously due to a greater floor area), there are hardly any queues and you get your parking refunded. Brilliant!
So all this fuss about Waitrose & Sainsbury's in Marlow won't affect me.

Of course Waitrose is better than Sainsburys. Everyone knows that. The staff are friendly and actually help you find things and the prices are about the same. Loudwater Tesco referred to in the article, is 'chav city'.

I have tried Ocado/ Waitrose,Tesco and Sainsburys - sure love M&S and Morrisons when weather okay. Physically disabled and all I can say is "THANK YOU SAINSBURYS!" Through snow, ice, wind, rain etc They have delivered (a day later when the snow really blocked our village off, after a phone call from them), very few substitutions, always on time, shopping unpacked for me on to kitchen working surface, free delivery if I spend £100 on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and loads of help if I venture forth to Wycombe or Beaconsfield store where there is always loads of chouce and GREAT offers! Sure a few "specials" I like from Waitrose, but Marlow, give them a whirl! You might be pleasantly surprised as I was!

Sainsbury's cancelled lots of deliveries in Penn on Xmas Eve, however Ocado managed to get through! The former have lost customers as a result.

No, "that" always starts with 't'

Otherwise it would be "khat", a mild narcotic popular in East Africa and parts of the Middle East,

Hilarious!!!

Deecee01- Tesco Loudwater is awful. Full of obese people, ironically dressed in jogging trousers, with trolleys packed full of multi-bags of crisps and catering size bottles of fizzy drinks.

Did Marlow used to have small, family owned food-stores? I recall the fishmonger (is he still there) with his wonderful hot-smoked salmon.

We lost them, they couldn't afford the rent, I now buy my fish from the fish monger that sets up every week in Dean Street carpark, and bread from the Sunday farmers market in the same place

So Marlow hates Sainsbury's in much the same way that GX hates Tesco oooh what a shock.

Firstly Penman, what a surprise Tesco Loudwater isn't a great example but look at the catchment area... If shopping with your socio-economic equal is a must travel 10 minutes in the other direction to Amersham Tesco or are you worried the people from GX, Jordans, etc will find you inferrior?

Secondly people in Marlow please get some perspective. Sainsbury's is a convenience outlet that provides an above average service and provides jobs to the local comunity this makes it an asset. If you want to shop else where please do but don't make the rest of us read about it as it bores us.

Finally to correct those incorrectly stating Waitrose as the number one supermarket retailer you are wrong the current holder of the 'Which' No1 Supermarket is Aldi. Waitrose came second. Google it and see.

Apologies for the rant but I am easily irritated by snobbish numb skulls with more time on their hands than sense.

I had to go there once as I was passing on Sunday afternoon just prior to closing. If you can read, you will see that I use Ocado.
If reading this bores you, the answer is simple. Don't.

Shouldn't this be directed at the BFP? After all, they wrote and published the article.

And I don't mind driving the few extra miles to Henley to shop, but I'll be buggered if I'm driving all the way to Reading to go to my nearest Aldi.

I love Aldi, and I see it is noted as the top shop. But I don't think the average up yourself Marlovian would like an Aldi store in their town.

Would you care to expand on why you think the average Marlovian (if indeed, there is such an average) is "up themselves". ?
.
If Aldi thought they could make money by having a store in Marlow, I'm sure they would open one.

Get over yourselves - I love how terrible eveyone thinks it is to shop in Loudwater Tesco's because of the class of people you need to mix with. Bit of advice - you don't have to date them. You don't even have to talk to them. That said, we shop online with Sainsbury's so don't need to even see them but they don't offend me if we do go!

We tried Waitrose for online shopping - found it cost the same as Sainsbury's but for half as much and we needed to still go shopping to get the other half they didn't stock. Also, the Sainsbury's drivers are nicer and more helpful as they seem to use older drivers who don't have a grudge (Tesco's drivers the very worst though). The fruit and veg almost as good (though not quite!) although strangely the ready meals of both are similar but not as good as Tesco Finest which are the only worthwhile thing going to Tesco for.

If you prefer what a certain retailer stocks then people do mind! i think that sainsbury's and tesco have too much of a monopoly over other supermarkets!
Waitrose, M&S and Morrisons in my view have better quality products than the rest! it is a matter of personal preference not snobbery!

As a Marlow residents of 47 years we shop at Asada.
It's cheaper and has a larger range of products.
Mind you if sainsburys is good it might save a journey.
Not all Marlow residents are up themselves although are lot are.
