'Third world shack' Marlow Post Office ditched for new location

MARLOW'S Post Office is leaving Dean Street, ditching the temporary building labelled a “third world shack” by tourists last year.

The Post Office has confirmed the move to a new site on the corner of the High Street and Institute Road.

It has been rubber stamped following a public consultation.

Marlow information centre will also be moving to the premises vacated by stationers Marlow Bureau, behind Marlow Jewellers.

Although the address is 55a High Street the entrance will be on Institute Road.

Wycombe District Council estimates the move will save £29,000 per year for a one off set up cost of £25,000.

The Post Office received has altered its original plan after comments from members of the public that a ramp must be provided for disabled users.

A handrail and bell will be installed, while a portable ramp may also be bought.

Marlow Chamber of Trade vice-president Annie Mulady said: “It will be excellent for business because the temporary post office really wasn't set up for commercial post.

“It only had two service shutters, certainly at packed times they weren't able to cope with the demand. There were people queueing out to the car park at Christmas.

“We hope they can staff up to meet the needs of all the businesses in the town. It will make life easier for businesses and customers.

“I don't think a portacabin style building is really an ideal location and is a bit of an eyesore.”

She added it the chamber is pleased to see another empty shop being filled.

Former Mayor Richard Scott, a Marlow Town Councillor, said: “We are delighted. The town council has fought for a long time to retain a Post Office in Marlow and were successful in getting the one in Dean Street car park."

Cllr Scott, also a Buckinghamshire County Councillor, said: “A centrally located Post Office is a very important feature both for residents and business users.

"A lot of small businesses find the service is a key part of their business.”

A Post Office statement read: “Customers will benefit from the branch being located in the heart of the local shopping area.

“The same range of services will continue to be available and customers can still collect benefits in cash using our everyday banking services or Post Office card account.”

It said the new service will be “set within a bright modern, spacious environment”.

The current Dean Street amenity will close on Monday February 22 at 5.30pm.

The new branch will open at 9am on Thursday February 25.

its nice the post office is getting a perminant home, shame it isn't on the high steert like the council claim, but I guess that ticks a box for them and someone gets a bonus? Maybe they will decide to spend the money they save on grit??? Personally though I wished the post office stayed where it was as its nearer the car park, but I am just being selfish.

I would hardly call the temporary Post Office a “third world shack”. You can get served in there quicker than in Wycombe's General Post Office.

Perhaps they could move the temporary building to Wycombe to compensate for all the sub-Post Offices we have lost recently?

I'm sure most 3rd world countries would love to have a warm place like that. :(
But this is Marlow and of course only the best will do for that bunch of whingers.....

As Ivor says, at least you have a post office and lets face it when they do build you a permanent one, you won't like it.

Oh, I forgot it's Marlow, they can't possibly have a shack for their Post Office, it needs a red carpet, gold plated door handles, and doorman on the door bowing and curtseying to them.

And why not gold plated handles and real granite counter tops, with perhaps a Greek God statue to lend more elegance to the new post office.
As a finishing touch what about a Diamond chandelier.
We deserve the best here in Marlow. If you Wycombe whinges got off your backsides and worked to get something better in Wycombe then you would not feel so hard done by.
Still we know that the majority of decent people in Wycombe like Marlow.
