Bid to increase car parking charges in Wycombe

Charges will go up at Easton Street car park in High Wycombe Charges will go up at Easton Street car park in High Wycombe

PARKING bosses want to increase charges at Wycombe car parks in a bid to net cash-strapped council chiefs £140,000 – though some fares will fall.

Wycombe District Council has announced plans to increase 55 individual charges, cut two, keep 40 the same and introduce eight new charges at 25 car parks and 42 streets.

It says the charges are ‘reasonable’.

Scroll down for the full charges.

Major changes include rises in multi-storey car park prices, new Sunday charges in some car parks and an increase from 50p to £1 or £2 in most on-street charges.

Charges will also be introduced in the Red Lion Way car park in Woodburn Green. This will be free up to two hours, £3 over two hours and £5.50 over four hours.

Yet parking will be free in the two multi-storeys after 9pm and some long-stay charges will fall.

If agreed by councillors, the proposed changes would go through a six week public consultation. Any changes would come into affect from September 1.

A council report says the move takes into account the costs of the service and the ‘contribution the service makes to other services’ run by WDC.

The authority took over traffic warden duties in October 2008 yet the service is struggling to break even.

Ruling Conservatives this week said the authority was facing a financial crisis because of low Government cash support. It approved a 1.75 per cent council tax increase.

It says the parking proposals take into account ‘the need to make the district accessible’, charges in other councils, ‘making best use of capacity and supply and demand’ and ‘the need to prioritise on-street parking for short stay’.

It adds there is a need to encourage more short stay parking in High Wycombe town centre and more long-stay parking on its outskirts.

Charges in the Eden and Sainsbury’s car park are also noted.

Charges were last changed in car parks in January 2008 and on streets in 2006.

The charges were part-devised by the council’s ‘watchdog’ committee, the improvement and review commission.

The Bucks Free Press was asked to leave its meetings under local government laws when the charges were discussed.

The report says: “These proposals would generate an additional daily charge income of £140,000 for a full financial year.”

The on-street parking charges increases are outrageous.
.
100% increases for almost all on street parking in High Wycombe.
.
The exceptions are Duke Street, Mendy Street and The Greenway where charges have gone up by a massive 200%.
.
I know the government capped the council tax rise, so why can't they cap the parking charges too??
.
Rises of !00% and 200% are surely taking the mickey.

Traders are taking a hammering, our towns are much quieter than usual, people are losing their jobs, I know what we could do, increase the cost of parking. What an innovative idea, that will really help the local economies. How are they getting away with rises in the hundreds persent! If there were any rises at all shouldn't they be in line with inflation at about 2 %. What a bunch of incompetent crooks. Next they will say they are only doing it for the ENVIRONMENT. You heard it here first!

I went to Aylesbury today, parked in the Retail car park, where Argos etc is for free. You just get a free ticket to display for 2 hours from the ticket machine, job done for 2 hours.

Well done AYLESBURY VALE DISTRICT COUNCIL, nice to see they think and look after their customers.
They obviously have people who don't sit on their brains.

once again good one AVDC.
it will make sense to go to Aylesbury more often.

BTW CLARKE, ANY MORE THOUGHTS ON GOING YET????????
pleeeeeeze

I had a pleasant experience with Aylesbury Vale District Council recently. I parked all day but only had £3.90 in change for the £4.00 ticket. So I took my ticket for half a day and at lunch time I rang AVDC to find out my options. The lady sympathised with me (WDC please note) and then asked for the registration details of my car and said she would tell the parking chaps to leave my car alone. When I got back to the car all was well. I don't think WDC offer that kind of service.

It's because they want more people to use buses as well. Yeah right.

I agree with the comments re Aylesbury DC. I have had reason to deal with them over my council tax recently. I found them to be courteous kind and professional.
Their waste disposal service is far better too and yes WDC could learn from them.

If they want to save money, just get rid of Clarke, and make the council workers pay for parking.

Clarke, and the others at the top are useless, and have no grasp of reality.

It does seem a short sighted move. Wycombe is hardly that most attractive place to visit, the Eden should have been a place to draw people in, but Uxbridge, Reading and Watford have far better shopping centres.

The only attraction to visiting Wycombe would be FREE parking, then it would have something the others didn't and encourage more shoppers and keep the existing businesses going.

AYLESBURY VALE DISTRICT COUNCIL do free parking for 2 hours.

I don't mind paying parking charges to cover the cost of providing those facilities but I'm dead against paying parking charges to support other council services - that's what the council tax is for!

Quote: The authority took over traffic warden duties in 2008 and are struggling to break even - Can't understand that, all the cars you see parked in places where they are not suppose to be and yet not a traffic warden in sight, Go to the areas where there are parking meters and they are walking around in pairs ready to pounce on any driver who is 2 minutes over the ticket limit, Get real, if their not earning their keep then get rid of them! Don't put up the car park charges for people who are working in town, many of the shopworkers are having to pay at least £10 a day to park, a big chunk out of a small salary every month.

Haven't they realised that maybe more people are now parking legally, and therefore not incurring fines!
.
Therefore, if they wish to save money, it's time to reduce the number of Traffic Wardens.

This is simply not true. As a WDC employee I have to pay for daily parking the same as everyone else. Only employees who have regular off-site meetings are eligible to be issued with a permit.
