Burglars 'trawling' Facebook for holiday plans, police warn

FACEBOOK is increasingly being trawled by burglars trying to find out residents' holiday plans, police have warned.

Householders and children have been told not to advertise their vacation plans on social networking sites.

Earlier this month police said Beaconsfield residents had been burgled after revealing details of their holiday on social networking sites.

The warning, sent out via Thames Valley Police's community messaging e-mail service, also encourages residents to get neighbours to park in their driveway when they go away and advises key holders to have a contact number.

Lamp timers should be used to make houses look occupied and post and newspapers should not be stacked on hall tables “where they may be visible to prying eyes”, the message said.

Det Insp Mark Lynch from Burnham CID said, following the Beaconsfield crime:

“Burglars use these websites as much as everyone else and if they come across someone who is telling them they are away on holiday and their profile also says where they live, then you are making it very easy for them indeed.”

There are loads of people who write things about going on holiday tomorrow or some other specific day.
.
However, if you only have a small number of REAL friends as Facebook friends and your privacy settings are set to "Friends only", it shouldn't be a problem.
.
The bigger problem is people not restricting who can see what. Even "Friends of friends" casts the net very wide, especially if any of your friends have many hundreds of Facebook friends.
