Illegal workers found at award winning curry restaraunt

Illegal workers found at award winning curry restaraunt Illegal workers found at award winning curry restaraunt

AN award winning curry house in Cookham faces a £20,000 fine after two illegal workers were found.

The UK Border Agency discovered two Bangladeshis aged 20 and 36 who had overstayed their visas at Maliks Tandoori on High Street, Cookham.

Checks were carried out on Monday following intelligence, the agency said.

Both men were served with immigration papers and granted bail while the agency gets travel documents so they can be deported.

Unless the company, which has restaurants in Marlow and Gerrards Cross, can prove it carried out the correct right to work checks on their staff, it faces a penalty of up to £20,000.

There is no suggestion Malik's was aware the pair had overstayed.

The enforcement operation was part of the agency’s planned nationwide action to tackle illegal working, sham marriages, bogus colleges and organised immigration crime.

Maria Leon, in charge of operations for the UK Border Agency in Berkshire, said: “It is the legal responsibility of all businesses to check that their employees have the right to work in the UK.

“If employers have concerns about whether staff - or their documents - are genuine they can contact the UK Border Agency for advice.

“We are happy to work with businesses to ensure the right pre-employment checks are carried out, but those intent on operating outside the law should be warned that they will be found and they will be punished.”

In 2008 Maliks won the Best Restaurant in the South East at the British Curry Awards - for the third time.

Maliks was not available for comment when contacted by the Free Press this week.

Oh what a surprise they have released them on bail to disapeer never to be seen again.... While they were here they should have checked the immigration status of all of the Taxi drivers in bucks. And taken the benefits agency with them at the same time.

actually they are unlikely to be on the way home due to the immigration people letting them go on bail. now they will just disapeer never to be seen again.

Read the manifesto all you little Englanders and then think about how we have reached the point that we are at now. Great chunks of our economy are based on those who work with out papers. Who cleans our towns & cities, serves you your food, wipes your arses in hospitals. Loads of Jones & Smiths? I think not...

To DocD, we need immigration controls otherwise it would be chaos. I taught asylum seekers last year and discovered they had free housing, free English lessons and even had the cheek to claim 300 quid for travel expenses, books. Do you mind you hard earned taxes going to people who aren't entitled, or maybe losing you place on a NHS waiting list? The reality is that the Uk system won't survive such an overload of people. Quality of service will go downhill. Get out while the going is relatively good.

Oh dear. I remember viewing a report on the BBC about illegal workers (in this case cleaners) working after hours in the foreign office and walking out with sensitive information. Makes you think.

As far as I understand it is normally workers human rights that are at risk in the above detailed situations. English or foreign. I guess that's just the start.

MALIKS CURRY HOUSES ARE THE BEST. NO QUESTION.

I AM CONCERNED THAT PRIMA-FACIE EVIDENCE SUGGESTS THAT MR MALIK HAS BEEN USING ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION TO WORK IN HIS CURRY HOUSES. THIS WILL BE A BLOW TO MR MALIK WHO IS EXTREMELY HARD-WORKING AND HAS CREATED A FANTASTIC BUSINESS PROVIDING A WONDERFUL SERVICE.

IF I WAS ADVISING MR MALIK I WOULD SUGGEST HE GIVES AN IMMEDIATE INTERVIEW WITH THE BFP.
EXPLAINS THE POSITION AND FURTHER OFFERS TO EMPLOY LOCAL WORKERS WHO ARE UNEMPLOYED AND TRAIN THEM IN HIS RESTAURANT. IN FACT I WOULD SUGGEST MR MALIK USED THIS AS AN OPPORTUNITY.
HE COULD GET A TELEVISION COMPANT INVOLVED TO CREATE AND FILM POSSIBLE ENGLISH STAFF IN AN ATTEMPT TO RE-CREATE TYPICAL INDIAN CUISINE AND TO BE JUDGED. MAYBE MASTERCHEF?
INDIAN FOOD IS EXTREMELY POPULAR IN SOCIETY.
SUCH A T.V. SHOW WOULD INVOKE IMMENSE INTEREST.
AFTER ALL DIDNT THE ENGLISH INVENT SOME CURRY DISH.....?
NO DOUBT SOMEONE WILL TELL US....

Maliks have very fine restaurants and are at the top end of Indian cusine.

However, we need to stamp out illegal workers who quite often work long hours for less than the minimum wage and often paid in cash. This practise will only end by severe punishments for those who employ such workers.

Who cares if they flee bail conditions, if every business employing illegals gets fined £10,000 per person employed, then it will soon end.

they ill disapear once on bail only to turn up else where on the below minium wage of some money grabbing corner cutting "good guy" boss

change the fine from £10,000 to £100,000 then see how many illegals are employed

From some of the above comments , does anyone else get the feeling that the standard of debate (and usage of English) has deteriorated in the recent past ?
.
What a pity ; even the abuse is of a very low quality , it seems.

I have a feeling that the hospital had a similar problem a few years back. I think it is more common than we care to think.

And i am in rare agreement with Tigeran - I can see no racist remarks on this page at all.

Tigeran, agreed. I see nothing rasist about any of the comments, just truth, think many British, regardless of race are getting fed up with people being here that should not be. BUT the employer should have checked the papers of his workers, everyone knows the law !
